Staff Electrical Engineer

Join Burns & McDonnell as a Staff Electrical Engineer and contribute to the creation of world-class designs for various projects, including power, process, corporate, healthcare, and industrial facilities. As a key member of our project teams, you will work closely with clients to adapt electrical plans according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Execute complex assignments requiring advanced electrical engineering techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment, and technological methods.
  • Coordinate departmental or divisional project studies, reports, or project design assignments.
  • Perform power system studies and system protection settings coordination on various projects (up to 500-kV voltage level).
  • Develop design basis documentation for protective settings and generate native relay configuration files.
  • Conduct design reviews and support quality control.
  • Assist project managers in developing scope of work and conceptual design for projects.
  • Train, guide, and mentor less experienced team members.
  • Support business development and marketing initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a directly related field plus three (3) years of experience in electrical systems studies in the electric utility or industrial power distribution industry.
  • Will accept a Master's degree plus two (2) years of related experience in lieu of Bachelor's degree plus three (3) years of related experience.
  • Ability to obtain a Professional Engineer licensure.
Preferred Experience/Skills
  • Previous experience in development of protective relay settings in Transmission or Distribution industry.
  • Prior experience in commonly utilized system modeling software programs (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM, etc.).
  • Knowledge of protection schemes and philosophies commonly applied at Transmission and Distribution substations.
  • Developing native relay setting files using SEL's AcSELerator and GE's Enervista software programs.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical single lines, three lines, schematics, functional diagrams, etc.
  • Designing calculations, including short circuit calculation, current transformer performance and ratio selection, over-current element coordination, zone-distance element selection and coordination, and relay loadability calculation.
  • Ability to perform Grounding, Arc Flash, and other Power system studies is a plus.
  • Providing engineering support with construction and commissioning activities for substations.
