Traffic Operations Technician

Role Summary
The City of Roanoke is looking for a dedicated individual to join the Sign Shop team within the Transportation Division. This role involves executing various manual tasks and operational duties related to traffic management, including the setup of traffic control for events, road closures, routine maintenance, pavement marking, and snow removal activities. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating a dump truck equipped with a spreader and must be available for on-call duties on a rotating schedule.
Key Responsibilities
The following are essential duties and responsibilities that may vary based on assignment:
- Installation and repair of traffic signs in the field.
- Collaboration with long-line striping and thermoplastic crews.
- Operation of boom trucks, light machinery, and various hand tools.
- Assistance with event setups and snow removal operations.
- Availability for emergency on-call duty.
- Maintenance of daily records related to field operations.
Supervisory Role
This position does not include supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform essential duties effectively. The following qualifications are required:
- A high school diploma or GED is required, along with one to three years of relevant experience or training in the trades.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting safety guidelines, operating instructions, and procedural manuals.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to apply common sense and reasoning to solve problems in standardized situations.
Certifications and Licenses
Depending on the specific assignment, candidates may need to possess a valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as a Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license with necessary endorsements. Pesticide Registered Technician Certification may also be required.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands for this position include regular sitting, use of hands for handling tools, and the ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
Work Environment
Employees in this role will be regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions and may encounter moving mechanical parts, vibrations, and loud noise levels. Occasional exposure to wet or humid conditions and airborne particles may also occur.
