Job Summary:

The Ohio Department of Education is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated School Nurse Leader to join our team. As a key member of our healthcare team, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing overall leadership and coordination of the district's health care services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct health screenings and make referrals as appropriate
  • Maintain up-to-date health records for students
  • Assume responsibility for injured or ill students
  • Act as health consultant for teachers, students, curriculum, school, health and community agencies
  • Act as liaison between school district and the medical community
  • Authorize exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases
  • Dispense medication or delegate according to Ohio Revised Code with appropriate training, demonstrations, supervision, and evaluation
  • Administer first aid and be available for emergency medical procedures in the K-12 building
  • Assist in disease control programs by enforcing local and state immunization laws, screening for lice and other communicable diseases
  • Assist with individual health care plans for students with special health care needs, and in-service staff as needed
  • Monitor school environment for safety
  • Act as consultant, health educator and counselor to promote disease prevention and healthy lifestyles for students, staff and parents
  • Provide leadership for school and community health issues
  • Observe ethics of the nursing profession, exhibit professional behavior and emotional stability
  • Identify nursing tasks appropriate to delegate in the individual situation, and provide procedural guidelines for orientation and training, return demonstration and documentation, schedule for supervision, and ongoing evaluation
  • Report all cases of child abuse and neglect to the proper authorities
  • Interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents
  • Promote good public relations
  • Communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
  • Purchase all necessary medical supplies, materials and equipment for the district
  • Coordinate all activities related to the school nursing program
  • Follow nursing procedures as covered by Ohio Revised Code and national standards of school nursing practice
  • Refer students/families to appropriate medical, social and mental health treatment agencies
  • Communicate with and serve as a consultant for parents, school personnel and students in regard to the health needs of the students, and continues this communication to determine if necessary follow-up is completed
  • Communicate with principal/supervisor and teachers regarding health conditions which might require special consideration or arrangements for the student while in class
  • Cooperate with the Local Board of Health in the control and prevention of communicable diseases
  • Implement policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with immunization, infections and contagious diseases
  • Assist teachers in the instruction of health topics
  • Develop and write IHP (Individual Health Plans) as required as well as assist in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) as necessary
  • Maintain records as required by law, school policy and administrative regulations
  • Participate in the development of programs and research
  • Complete required paperwork in a timely fashion
  • Attend in-service programs or workshops related to maintenance of position
  • Engage in crisis prevention intervention and de-escalation strategies as necessary
  • Operate office machines, technology and equipment appropriate to the position
  • Maintain high standards of ethics, honesty and integrity in all matters
  • Comply with all Board Policies and Administrative Guidelines
  • Arrive on time to work each regular work day
  • Be in attendance every regular work day, excluding long-term illnesses, medical leaves, and other unique circumstances
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all district, personnel and student information as required by federal, state and local policy
  • Be able to be adaptable and flexible with changes, updates, processes, and procedures
  • Perform other tasks, consistent with the position, as may be assigned by Superintendent and/or designee

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher
  • Registered Nurse (RN) License by the Ohio Board of Nursing
  • Ohio Department of Education Pupil Services/School Nurse License
  • State and Federal Background checks free of infractions as required by Ohio law and Board Policy
  • Ability to provide appropriate references
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification in crisis prevention intervention and de-escalation techniques
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  • Willingness and ability to work as a team member and with the public
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment
  • Computer expertise appropriate to the position
  • Effective and demonstrated problem solving, critical thinking, analytical, oral and written communication, and organizational skills
  • Valid driver's license and/or provide own transportation
  • History of strong work record, including good job attendance
  • Documented evidence of participation in mandatory annual trainings (i.e. SafeSchools)
