The University of Illinois is looking for a proficient Magnetic Resonance Imaging Specialist to manage the operation of advanced MRI systems for research purposes, ensuring adherence to research protocols and institutional guidelines. The ideal candidate will be tasked with developing and refining MRI research methodologies, overseeing data collection and analysis, assessing equipment performance, and troubleshooting technical challenges. Collaboration with fellow MRI specialists, engineers, researchers, and principal investigators will be crucial. Flexibility to work during evenings and weekends is necessary.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Update and maintain imaging protocols as required.
  • Screen patients/subjects in accordance with departmental policies and safety standards.
  • Operate supplementary instruments for research initiatives (e.g., fMRI stimulator, power injector, EEG, etc.).
  • Perform venipuncture and administer contrast media following institutional protocols.
  • Ensure the MRI suite is clean and organized according to established standards.
  • Conduct advanced MRI image collection, ensuring image quality and transferring data to designated systems.
  • Collaborate with researchers on project design and objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with MR safety protocols and institutional review board regulations.
  • Conduct quality assurance checks on the scanner and assist with maintenance tasks.
  • Report equipment malfunctions and supply shortages to the supervisor.
  • Develop and implement innovative research strategies based on project requirements.
  • Test, customize, and apply new protocols, methods, and techniques.
  • Assist students and other MRI personnel as necessary.
  • Perform additional assigned duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Current registration or certification in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) from recognized bodies.
  3. American Heart Association BLS CPR Certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • MRI Technologist Certification and a minimum of one year of experience operating MRI scanners.
  • Technical expertise in MRI protocols and quality assurance procedures.
  • Strong understanding of human and non-human primate anatomy, as well as MRI physics.
  • Experience with scanner/workstation, EEG, and fMRI equipment in compliance with regulations.
  • Ability to work in environments with moderate acoustic noise and electromagnetic fields.
  • Experience handling biological materials and potential exposure to various animal models.
  • Physical capability to stand or sit for extended periods, walk within the work environment, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
  • Effective communication skills for conversing and exchanging information.
  • Visual acuity for tasks such as inspecting and assessing images.
  • Ability to engage in physical activities such as pushing, pulling, and lifting.
