Position Overview:
This role is governed by the collective bargaining agreement between the Chicago Park District and the Service Employees International Union Local 73. The District is creating a roster of qualified candidates for this position, which will be considered if the role is not filled by internal eligible applicants.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
Under general supervision, this position is responsible for the planning, promotion, organization, execution, and instruction of various physical activities. The role includes conducting classes, teaching games, managing recreational equipment, and recruiting volunteers. Related duties may be performed as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Designs and implements course curricula for the instruction of sports, games, and competitive athletics.
  • Provides guidance and supervision to participants in sports, games, and competitive athletics.
  • Demonstrates proper techniques and skills for recreational and athletic activities.
  • Adjusts programs to accommodate varying levels of participant skill development.
  • Offers instruction in advanced strategies for team and individual sports, physical fitness, and conditioning.
  • Communicates rules of individual and team sports effectively.
  • Explains the fundamentals of low-organized activities.
  • Instructs on rhythm and movement.
  • Implements and promotes safety protocols for recreational and athletic activities.
  • Facilitates conflict resolution among participants and manages inventory of recreational equipment and supplies.
  • Sets up recreational apparatus and equipment as needed.
  • Officiates in team and individual sports.
  • Encourages sportsmanship and fosters creativity among participants.
  • Engages constructively with participants, parents, volunteers, and the community.
  • Consults with individuals and community groups to assess their interests, needs, and desires.
  • Determines eligibility requirements for tournaments.
  • Verifies event dates and standards.
  • Establishes schedules for tournaments, leagues, and competitions.
  • Conducts meetings regarding competitions and special events.
  • Keeps records and prepares reports as necessary.
  • Supervises unstructured play and enforces rules and regulations.
  • Participates in workshops and in-service training seminars.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience: A Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, Recreation and Leisure, Social Services, Education, Special Education, Child Development, or a related field, along with two (2) years of experience in Park and Recreation or a related area. Alternatively, completion of 20 credit hours from an accredited institution in Recreation, Leisure Studies, or Physical Education, coupled with at least four (4) years of relevant work experience. A Bachelor's degree is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Comprehensive understanding of athletic, leisure, and recreational theories and principles. Proficiency in teaching recreational, leisure, and athletic activities. Strong oral and written communication skills. Effective organizational skills. Ability to assess skill levels and instruct accordingly in recreational, leisure, and athletic activities.
