Job Title: Principal Nuclear Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Nuclear Engineer to join our team at the Naval Nuclear Laboratory. As a key member of our Materials Manufacturing area, you will be responsible for the research and testing of nuclear fuel and cladding materials.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with engineering, laboratory, facility, and compliance organizations to enable and conduct test programs.
  • Plan, design, model, analyze, manufacture, and deploy laboratory equipment, including nuclear, chemical, mechanical, structural, and electrical components and systems.
  • Develop models of unit operations, execute testing and analysis of data to test and verify process models, and utilize modeling to improve unit operation performance.
  • Develop and fabricate unique materials systems up to and including small-scale production demonstration.
  • Document progress, analyze results, and conduct presentations as needed.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science-related field and 9 years of relevant experience.
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science-related field and 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Currently or previously Shift Supervisor Part II qualified.
  • Qualified SIT and 3 years EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program.
  • Currently or previously CRE qualified.
  • 6 years as SRE.
  • SRE qualified and 9 years of experience.
Preferred Skills:
  • Materials science, control systems, and chemical engineering.
  • Data analytics, statistical design of experiments, machine learning.
  • Modeling of fluid dynamics and thermal transfer.
  • Demonstrated software programming skills in LabVIEW and Python environments.
  • Experience in the core material and core manufacturing technical areas.
  • Core material vendor contract and production oversight.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly and concisely articulate technical work and detail to broad audiences.
  • Demonstrated can-do proactive approach that displays self-motivation, time and project management skills, ownership, and personal accountability.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations.

FMP is a government contractor and maintains a drug-free workplace and workforce. All candidates must be able to pass a drug test in compliance with FMP company policy and 10 CFR 707.
