Job Title: Staff Attorney I

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Staff Attorney I to join our team at the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy. As a Staff Attorney I, you will play a critical role in providing exceptional representation to our clients and upholding the principles of justice.

About the Role:

The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment. You will be responsible for conducting client interviews, researching legal issues, and writing clear and concise motions. Your strong analytical skills and attention to detail will enable you to develop a theory of the case and provide advice to clients regarding disposition.

Responsibilities:
  • Represent clients in District Court cases with vigor and integrity.
  • Conduct client interviews and maintain accurate records of case facts.
  • Research and write motions, ensuring clarity and concision.
  • Obtain knowledge of the case through discovery and investigation.
  • Develop a theory of the case consistent with the facts and law.
  • Will to try cases as needed.
Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you must be admitted to practice law and in good standing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky or comply with Kentucky Supreme Court Rule (SCR) (limited certification of admission to practice), SCR (attorney participants in defender or legal services programs), SCR (supervised practice), or SCR (practice pending admission). You must also maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification.

Working Conditions:

Duties are performed primarily in both office and courtroom settings, with travel required. This role has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS.
