Research Associate

The Whitehead Institute is seeking a highly skilled Research Associate to contribute to laboratory research aimed at understanding the importance of non-coding genomic variation on gene expression regulation in human disease, including cancer. This role will assist in planning and executing experiments, analyzing and interpreting data, and participating in scientific activities such as seminars, group meetings, and journal clubs.
Key Responsibilities
- In consultation with the Principal Investigator or project manager, conducts bench-level experiments and small independent research projects.
- Assists with mammalian tissue culture, including generating and maintaining cell lines, preparing cell media, and preparing cells for use in various experiments.
- Collaborates with lab members on a wide range of experiments in cell biology and biochemistry, including CRISPR-based genome editing, cell line characterization of both normal and cancer cells, RNA extraction and quantification, protein analysis, PCR, confocal microscopy, and molecular cloning.
- Develops and optimizes protocols, improving methods currently employed.
- Analyzes experimental results and presents them in a professional and clear manner, documenting and compiling data, and reporting findings to the supervisor in oral and written reports.
- Maintains an organized laboratory notebook detailing experimental procedures and results, and keeps a log of acquired data.
- Prepares stocks and aliquots of common buffers and reagents, organizing additional supplies as needed.
- Obtains experience in and practices scientific presentations, project outlining, figure generation, and manuscript writing.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field; experience working in a research laboratory is preferred.
- Proficiency in basic lab techniques.
- Prior experience with tissue culture is advantageous.
- Flexibility with schedule, determined by tissue culture and experimental needs.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills required.
Benefits
- This full-time position offers a competitive salary of $65,000 - $70,000 annually, commensurate with experience, plus benefits.
