Position Summary
- Responds to both urgent and routine pre-hospital emergencies with composure, efficiency, and safety.
Core Responsibilities
- Delivers basic and advanced medical assistance to patients in pre-hospital scenarios, adhering to the guidelines established by Yankton County Emergency Medical Services (YCEMS), under the supervision of qualified personnel.
- Maintains comprehensive knowledge of YCEMS protocols and operational standards.
- Safely extricates individuals from emergencies, utilizing appropriate techniques and resources.
- Ensures that emergency vehicles, equipment, and medical supplies are properly maintained, stocked, and functional, reporting any issues to senior staff.
- Completes patient care reports and related documentation accurately and promptly.
- Upholds patient confidentiality regarding their care and medical history at all times.
- Exhibits professionalism and courtesy in all interactions with patients, colleagues, supervisors, and other healthcare professionals.
- Collaborates effectively as part of a team, contributing to system readiness and quality assurance practices.
- Adheres to safety protocols to prevent injuries and accidents during operations.
- Maintains proficiency in required skills and competencies.
- Ensures all certifications and training are current and valid.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Leadership Duties
- Provides guidance and training to ensure safe and effective departmental operations and patient care.
Qualifications
Essential Skills and Knowledge
- Acts as a positive and professional role model.
- Demonstrates strong leadership and teamwork abilities.
- Maintains knowledge of departmental patient care protocols and HIPAA regulations.
- Follows both written and verbal instructions effectively.
- Exhibits strong communication skills, both oral and written.
Educational Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Current National Registry of EMT Certification.
- Current South Dakota ALS License for ALS EMTs (EMT-Intermediate & Advanced-EMT).
- Current South Dakota EMT Certification for BLS providers.
- Current AHA BLS CPR Certification.
- Current BTLS or PHTLS Certification for advanced providers, preferred.
- NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800 certifications.
Experience
- Entry-level position or
- Experienced candidates welcome.
Additional Requirements
- Ability to pass a pre-employment physical examination, if required.
- Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check, if required.
- Must possess a valid Driver's License with a clean driving record and meet any additional driving training requirements.
- Willingness to work various shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Flexibility is essential as emergency services operate continuously; assigned shifts may vary, and readiness to respond immediately is required.
- Familiarity with local geography, including maps and navigation systems.
- Knowledge of current standards of care and equipment usage.
- Ensures all certifications and training are kept up-to-date.
The provider may encounter various hazards while responding to emergencies, including but not limited to: dust, fumes, fire, smoke, chemicals, and adverse weather conditions. There is a potential risk of injury or harm from various factors, including violent situations and hazardous environments. Adherence to YCEMS safety guidelines is mandatory to mitigate risks associated with scene safety and exposure to potential hazards.
