Substitute Nurse Position

We are seeking a qualified Substitute Nurse to join our team at Spotswood Public Schools. As a Substitute Nurse, you will be responsible for providing health services to students, faculty, and staff in our district.

The Substitute Nurse will work in cooperation with the school physician, other school health professionals, and community health professionals to ensure a healthy school climate and to minimize absence due to illness. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting health services and screening programs, scheduling and supervising health surveys, and providing emergency care and first aid as needed.

• Conduct health services and screening programs as required by law and/or board policies.
• Schedule and supervise health surveys of students and staff and make referrals and conduct follow-up activities as necessary.
• Provide emergency care and first aid as needed.
• Maintain up-to-date health records on all students, including records of immunizations, and ensure their confidentiality.
• Help prevent and control communicable disease through lectures, inspections, exclusion, and readmission of students and staff in keeping with state and local health regulations and school policies.
• Notify the principal or designee to arrange for immediate examination of any pupil who appears to be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
• Confer with and advise students, parents, and staff members on matters pertaining to the health and safety of students.
• Counsel students on good health habits.
• Provide supervision for sick or injured students until placed under parent/guardian care.
• Assist the principal and the child study team in the identification and placement of students with disabilities who need special education services.
• Participate in the development of a comprehensive health education curriculum and serve as a health/safety education resource person to teachers.
• Promote a healthy and safe school environment by assisting the administration and staff to maintain safe and sanitary conditions throughout the school.
• Administer prescribed medication to students in accordance with law and board policy.
• Collaborate with community and other non-school health agencies to meet the health needs of children and families.
• Provide special health care and related services to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
• Respect the confidentiality of records.
• Assist the principal with the preparation of the school's health budget.
• Maintain security of school health supplies.
• Remain abreast of current developments in the health field through continuing education and participation in professional development activities.
• Prepare health and safety reports as required by law and/or requested by the principal and/or superintendent.
• Provide electronic monthly reports utilizing district software program on a timely basis on specific topics requested by the Board of Education and/or district administrators.
• Identify students showing evidence of abuse and/or neglect and report to administration and proper law enforcement agencies as required by law.
• Perform such other appropriate duties as required under law or as may be assigned by the principal or superintendent.

• NJ School Nurse certificate or Substitute School Nurse Certificate.
• Demonstrated expertise in school health nursing practice.
• Knowledge of child growth and development, family dynamics, current health issues, wellness education, community health, and social services resources.
• Ability to communicate effectively with non-school health professionals and social service agencies.
• Required criminal history background check and proof of US citizenship or legal resident alien status.

The Substitute Nurse will work in a school setting, providing health services to students, faculty, and staff. The successful candidate will be required to work in a fast-paced environment, making decisions quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
