ABOUT US

Our mission is to ensure that our curriculum and teaching methods are both aligned with educational standards and culturally relevant, fostering an environment that encourages students to become critical thinkers and adept problem-solvers.

We are committed to actively challenging and dismantling systems that uphold inequities and promote white supremacy. Our aim is to cultivate a diverse and talented workforce that mirrors the backgrounds and experiences of our student body, fostering an inclusive atmosphere for all staff members.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

We believe that every child has the potential to thrive when immersed in a stimulating environment characterized by high expectations, rigorous academic standards, and the support of dedicated educators.

We maintain that equity and excellence can coexist, allowing us to meet the diverse needs of our students while engaging families and striving for outstanding academic outcomes. We view it as both a privilege and a responsibility to help bridge the opportunity gap within the Brooklyn community.

WHO YOU ARE

We are seeking enthusiastic and committed educators to become part of our faculty. You may have some experience working with children but might be new to leading a classroom.

You are eager to contribute to a setting that prioritizes student engagement, critical thinking, and relationship-building. Successful educators in our network embrace challenges, value collaboration, and cultivate meaningful connections with all students.

Essential Qualities:
  • Dedication to serving historically underserved and under-resourced communities.
  • Commitment to engaging in identity work essential for a culturally responsive teaching approach.
  • Exceptional patience and focus to navigate challenges and achieve positive outcomes.
  • Strong classroom management skills to maintain high expectations and student engagement.
  • Outstanding communication abilities, both verbal and written.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized.
  • Experience working with children is preferred.
  • A Bachelor’s degree is required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In this role, you will serve as a support teacher in a classroom, honing your skills under the mentorship of an experienced educator.

The Apprentice Teacher will engage in professional development across various teaching aspects, including classroom management, lesson planning aligned with standards, and delivering rigorous instruction that emphasizes student cognitive engagement. You will be expected to:

  • Lead one instructional period each day.
  • Assist the mentor teacher during all instructional blocks.
  • Conduct small group instruction across core subjects and gradually progress to leading a whole-group lesson daily.
  • Participate actively in all meetings, including Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), grade-level discussions, and professional development sessions.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across different subjects and grade levels.
  • Contribute to the creation, revision, administration, and grading of assessments.
  • Maintain accurate and organized student records.
  • Conduct parent-teacher conferences and maintain ongoing communication with parents.
  • Ensure student safety at all times.
  • Assist with non-instructional student supervision, including arrival/dismissal, hallway monitoring, and lunch duty.
  • Participate in monthly cohort training and professional development sessions.
  • Engage in identity work and discussions aimed at dismantling white supremacy culture.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Explore Schools offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package. The salary for this role is determined through an equity lens and is based on relevant experience.

The annual salary range for an incoming Apprentice Teacher is between $55,000 and $59,000. Additional compensation opportunities are available for extra hours worked.

We provide extensive training and professional development to support Apprentice Teachers in transitioning to full-time teaching roles.

Benefits Include:
  • A competitive benefits plan covering up to 95% of costs for employees and their families, including dental and vision plans.
  • Employer-paid disability and life insurance.
  • Parental leave benefits and flexible spending account options.
  • Generous vacation time and paid holidays.
  • Professional development opportunities and continuing education scholarships.
  • Employee assistance programs and childcare assistance.
  • A 403(b) retirement plan with employer matching.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
