Job Title: Mental Health Registered Nurse

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Mental Health Registered Nurse to join our team at GEO Corrections & Detentions. As a Mental Health Registered Nurse, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality care to our patients and contributing to our mission to provide the best rehabilitation and community reintegration programs and services.

Job Summary

The Mental Health Registered Nurse will assist in providing psychiatry services within the facility and will be a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team. The successful candidate will have excellent diagnostic skills, patience, and natural empathy, and will be able to work effectively with patients, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare the daily call out list and ensure ordered lab work has been completed and filed.
  • Complete required data entry into the client system for every patient that has contact with psychiatric clinician.
  • Work closely with the clinician to ensure that the AIMS is completed as required for inmates who are prescribed antipsychotic medication.
  • Ensure clinician orders are carried out and sign off orders, generate medication administration records, schedule lab tests, perform EKGs, and schedule follow-up appointments.
  • File completed paperwork (evaluations, AIMS, medication consents, etc.) in the appropriate place.
  • Monitor labs and refer patients to appropriate providers.
  • Participate and contribute to the development of individual treatment plans and attend the weekly multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Responsible for monthly reports via computer database to the client and employer.
  • Ensure patients receive a 30-day supply of medications upon release from facility.
  • Respond appropriately to negative findings from client and internal audits with timely CAPs.
  • Complete intake and admission paperwork for actively suicidal patients.
  • Conduct specific daily mental health screening on suicidal patients and communicate observations to providers.
  • Monitor patients for extrapyramidal symptoms and give emergency medications if ordered.
  • Supervise medication compliance to oversee the general health and well-being of the patient and assure referral to the provider when the patient misses prescribed doses as required by policy.
  • Observe patients for signs of disorder or tension and report such observations to a higher clinical authority.
  • Strive to build collaborative relationships with the patients; educate them about their treatment plan.
  • Provide medication education including importance of compliance as needed.
  • Respond to patients in crisis using active listening and de-escalation techniques to help patients regain emotional control and composure.
  • Provide counseling in accordance with the team's treatment plan.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • An Associate or Bachelor's degree from an approved program; graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
  • A current, unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state the facility is located.
  • Previous experience in the management and treatment of mental health patients.
  • Two (2) years of direct work experience preferred.
  • Ability to work without direct, immediate supervision in performing nursing diagnosis, and provide appropriate follow-through treatment.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
