Job Summary

The College of Charleston is seeking a highly skilled Public Historian/Curator to join our team. This is a temporary grant position that will lead the development and delivery of public programs, curate and develop digital initiatives, lead outreach efforts, and administer budgetary processes for the project.

Key Responsibilities
  • Public Programming and Exhibition
    • Develop and deliver public programs, including conferences, symposia, and workshops, in partnership with academic departments and programs on campus and in the region.
    • Curate, develop, and coordinate digital initiatives to deepen the cultural, historic, artistic, and civic relevance of Avery's collections, exhibitions, and mission.
    • Collaborate with the Curatorial Committee to develop exhibitions that showcase Avery collections and highlight important aspects of the African American historical narrative as well as relevant topics around contemporary African American issues.
    • Work with the Curatorial Committee to develop clear, informative, and comprehensive text for exhibition panels and promotional materials for each exhibition.
    • Provide copy for Avery website and other marketing materials.
    • Install exhibitions.
    • Work with the Education Coordinator and Avery's Outreach and Public Programs Team to develop, produce, and analyze exhibition-related programming, educational materials, didactics, public relations, and marketing efforts.
  • Outreach
    • Provide information and assistance to the Project Director to develop communications and marketing materials and strategies regarding exhibitions and programs.
  • Administration
    • Work with the grant Co-PIs, Project Director, and Facilities, Outreach, and Public Programming Coordinator to track exhibition budgets and expenditures.
    • Document and disseminate information about projects via conferences and other professional learning communities when opportunities arise.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in history, art history, or a related field is required.
  • Wide knowledge of and enthusiasm about contemporary art is also required.
  • Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
  • Curatorial and art handling experience with a record of increasing professional responsibility and measurable accomplishments.
  • Experience conceptualizing, designing, and implementing educational materials and lessons for community-based educators and administrators.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diverse, equitable, and inclusive museum experiences.
  • Research interest in the diversity of American history, identity, and narratives, specifically African American history.
  • Strong organization, communication, and writing skills.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and capacity to handle multiple tasks at once, including researching and planning several projects at the same time.
  • Experience and/or interest in research, libraries, genealogy, or other areas related to archival work is required.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as with the public and other staff members.
  • Computer experience, and appreciation for rare and unique materials that require special and careful handling.
  • Working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Event coordination and management experience.
  • Experience designing and working with websites.
  • Preferred: Certification with the National Association for Interpretation.
