DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:
The laboratory departments provide a variety of services to our multi-hospital organization and outreach community, including blood collection, processing, testing, and reporting of results across all disciplines of laboratory medicine.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Laboratory Supervisor at St. Charles Health System is a hands-on leader responsible for ensuring and maintaining service excellence in all phases of testing across one or more laboratories within the St. Charles Health System. This role oversees staffing and daily laboratory operations, directly managing laboratory personnel.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:


Actively engages as a member of the laboratory leadership team to uphold safe, efficient, and compliant operations and services.

Performs the responsibilities of a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technologist, dedicating 60% of time to bench duties.

Monitors the accuracy, quality, and timeliness of services provided in one or more technical areas, ensuring compliance with all regulatory, legal, and organizational standards.

Conducts personnel supervisory functions, allocating 40% of time to supervisory duties, including coaching, education, staff development, competency assessments, and annual evaluations. Adjusts staffing and scheduling to maintain safe and efficient laboratory operations.

Collaborates with the Director to develop and manage the quarterly budget for the assigned laboratory.

Assists with capital requests, workflow planning, and evaluation of new tests or instruments.

Coordinates new staff orientation, training, and initial competency assessments.

Responsible for annual technical and phlebotomy competencies for staff, ensuring all necessary records are updated and filed promptly.

Provides technical consultation, education, and decision support for technical staff, clinicians, clients, and customers at the assigned facility.

Maintains and updates applicable procedures, quality system records, and proficiency testing records as necessary.

Ensures instrument comparisons are performed, documented, and reviewed promptly, and linearity studies are conducted as required by regulatory agencies and indicated by quality control.


Directs, coaches, and monitors the performance of all direct reports to foster a high-performance team that meets organizational and laboratory objectives.

Ensures all direct reports comply with regulatory and safety requirements, implementing and managing all organizational safety directives and goals.

Oversees the team's delivery of customer service in a manner that promotes goodwill, ensuring timeliness, efficiency, and accuracy.

Conducts all activities with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality.

Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, supporting the health system's corporate integrity efforts by acting ethically and appropriately, reporting known or suspected violations, and cooperating fully with all investigations and proceedings.

EDUCATION


Required:
Bachelor's degree in a related field. Graduate of an accredited school of MLS/MT in accordance with ASCP standards.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION


Required:
Current Oregon driver's license or the ability to obtain upon hire, meeting SCHS driving requirements. Ability to travel to all SCHS worksites.

Current national certification or licensure at the Technologist/Scientist level by one or more accredited credentialing agencies: ASCP, AMT, AAB, HEW, and California Department of Health Services.

EXPERIENCE


Required:
Minimum two (2) years of experience as a laboratory generalist. Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access), database management, document preparation, and project presentations.


Preferred:
Minimum one year of previous laboratory leadership experience. Experience leading team meetings and disseminating organizational information (e.g., QA, QC, Process Improvement).

Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
