Job Summary:

The Medical Laboratory Assistant plays a vital role in the healthcare team by performing various preanalytic specimen collection, identification, order entry, verification, and communication duties.

Responsibilities include receiving phone calls from internal and external sources, triaging calls appropriately, and relaying messages to staff in a timely and accurate manner.

Proficiency in operating multiple electronic applications used for scheduling appointments, ordering tests, obtaining test results, messaging, and recording patient information is required.

This role requires the ability to work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure, as well as communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone.

The ideal candidate will have a High School Diploma or GED equivalent and a minimum of one year experience in medical lab performing specimen collection and computer data entry.

A working knowledge of statistical, database, and graphic applications is preferred.

The Medical Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Collecting and processing specimens for laboratory testing
  • Operating electronic applications for scheduling appointments and ordering tests
  • Communicating with patients and staff in a professional and courteous manner
  • Performing basic math functions and managing multiple assignments effectively
  • Working independently with minimal supervision and problem-solving

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Minimum of one year experience in medical lab performing specimen collection and computer data entry.

Knowledge and Skills:
Medical terminology knowledge preferred. Working knowledge of statistical, database, and graphic applications preferred.

Able to:

read; write legibly; speak in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer and software programs necessary to the position; troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment.

Relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction.

Communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail.

Distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place/patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.

Licensures and Certifications:
California Phlebotomy Technician certification required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
