Summary:

Qualifications:
The following standards outline the minimum qualifications required for the Physician occupational series:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Education: A Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from an accredited institution in the United States or Canada.

This degree must have been accredited by recognized medical education bodies at the time of attainment.



Foreign Medical Degree:

A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign institution must demonstrate educational equivalency to accredited U.S. medical schools.

Equivalency can be established through certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates or other recognized pathways.



Licensure:
Applicants must hold a current, unrestricted medical license or registration as a Physician from a recognized jurisdiction in the United States.

Graduate Training:

Following the attainment of a medical degree, candidates must have completed at least one year of supervised clinical experience, such as an internship or the first year of a residency program.

Graduate training programs must be accredited by recognized bodies within the United States or Canada.

Internships provide broad clinical experience under supervision, while residency programs focus on specialized training in a medical field.

Fellowships offer advanced training beyond residency in a specific medical specialty.

For GS-1 positions, candidates meeting the basic requirements qualify for GS-11 roles.

Additional requirements for higher grades include five years of graduate training in the relevant specialty or equivalent experience.

To meet the minimum qualifications, candidates must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service.

Specialized experience may be gained in both private and public sectors, involving oversight of primary care programs and direct patient care for diverse age groups.

Additionally, candidates must possess current Board Certification in primary care, with Family Practice Board Certification preferred.

Evidence of board certification must be submitted with the application.
