Job Title: Mechanical Engineer

Job Summary:

The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for managing the daily operation, maintenance, construction, repairs, planning, and design for all HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Energy Management Systems, Elevators, and Fire Protection Systems in the Boston Public Schools. This role will work closely with the Assistant Director of Planning, Engineering, Sustainability, and Environment to ensure the effective management of building systems and the development of capital upgrades and sustainability initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage daily operation, maintenance, construction, repairs, planning, and design for all HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Energy Management Systems, Elevators, and Fire Protection Systems.
  • Develop and monitor contract budgets and change orders for maintenance and repair contracts.
  • Direct project management of various projects, including mechanical upgrades, elevator modernizations, and energy efficiency projects.
  • Coordinate fire extinguisher and kitchen suppression systems inspections with building occupancy permit inspections.
  • Oversee energy efficiency projects and coordinate annual elevator inspections with the MA Department of Public Safety.
  • Direct BPS employees in the daily operation, maintenance, and repairs of BPS building mechanical systems.
  • Authorize overtime for after-hours maintenance and repairs and respond to emergencies.
  • Develop and review plans and specifications for construction projects.
  • Directly responsible for the direction of 2 elevator mechanics and 2 fire extinguishers-fire suppression system technicians.
  • Respond to all calls and coordinate personnel and equipment on a 24-hour, 7-day basis to handle departmental emergencies.

Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering.
  • 7-10 years of experience employed in a professional setting.
  • Experience in school construction and contracts.
  • Familiarity with reading and reviewing plans and specs, working with building trades, and construction processes.
  • Experience with budget and financial management.
  • Experience using computers, Microsoft Office suite, Google Drive suite, and electronic communications tools.
  • Ability to prepare written and oral reports and give public presentations.
  • Ability to initiate, manage, and complete small and large facilities and sustainability projects.
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational, facilitation, and multitasking skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a committed team player with a consensus-building approach.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Word and Excel and Google Drive apps.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and have daily availability of an automobile for travel to assigned schools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior work in either Massachusetts state or local government with a knowledge of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Safety regulations and the Boston Fire Prevention Code.
  • Experience working in an educational setting, especially with children and teachers.
  • Familiarity with the city of Boston and Boston Public Schools.
