The City of New York is seeking a highly skilled Investigative Analyst to join its Hate Crimes Unit in the Trial Division. As a key member of the team, you will provide analytical investigative support to the Chief and Deputy Chief of the Unit, Investigators, and Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) prosecuting hate crimes in Manhattan.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist ADAs in all aspects of investigations and trials, including video surveillance reviews, jail call screenings, obtaining out of state records, and case data synthesis.
  • Review defendant incident histories and reports to prepare analysis for potential hate crime charges.
  • Coordinate with ADAs, DANY investigators, and NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force (HCTF) detectives to track pending investigations and cases for updates.
  • Answer the Office's Hate Crimes Hotline, advise callers, log incidents, provide general information, and make referrals to appropriate agencies.
  • Perform in-depth searches to investigate witnesses and possible suspects by utilizing government, public, and social media outlets.
  • Create a weekly memorandum outlining key updates on cases and investigations, hotline calls, community events, important press clips on hate crimes, and other related matters.
  • Maintain a database archive for all cases and investigations.
  • Run statistics and maintain this data on hate crimes in Manhattan by year, precinct, type of crime, etc.
  • Draft correspondence and legal documents.
  • Assist ADAs in the redaction and preparation of documents for e-discovery.
  • Assist ADAs with proofreading, cite checking, and locating files and documents.
  • Testify before the Grand Jury, at trial, and other judicial proceedings.
  • Perform related administrative and clerical tasks as assigned.
  • Stay up-to-date on local, national, and international news regarding bias and hate crimes, trends, community events, etc.
  • Assist in the witness and victim interview process.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college and one (1) year of experience either as a paralegal in the criminal justice field or equivalent.
  • Preferred Requirements/Skills:
    • Excellent organizational and creative problem-solving skills.
    • Detail-oriented with the ability to follow directions and apply proper policies, procedures, and guidelines.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access).
    • Ability to learn, update, and edit existing proprietary applications, and quickly learn and use various computer systems.
    • Ability to work independently with frequent interruptions, manage deadlines, and adapt to changes in workflow.
    • Strong attention to detail and high concern for data accuracy.
    • Ability to interact and communicate (orally and in writing) with all levels of staff, court representatives, law enforcement representatives, and witnesses.
    • Fluency in a foreign language (particularly Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, or Fukienese) is helpful though not necessary.
    • Advanced knowledge of criminal justice investigative internet search techniques and databases, including, but not limited to, CLEAR and eJustice.
    • Proficiency in Internet search strategies and techniques, including preserving Facebook and other social media profiles.
    • Ability to communicate investigative results to other team members and to testify in court.
    • Excellent interpersonal, time management, writing, and communication skills.
