Position Overview

UM, Capital Region, part of the University of Maryland Medical System, is seeking an Advanced Practice Practitioner to enhance the Neuroscience team to address the growing clinical needs and expanding roles in neuroscience at UM Capital Region Health.

  • Become a vital member of a diverse team that manages neurosurgery, neurocritical care, and elective neurosurgery cases.
    • The Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP) will receive comprehensive training to support all facets of the neuroscience team.
    • Opportunities to provide coverage for other APP-led service lines will be available.
  • Execute routine and advanced responsibilities as outlined in the provider's delegation agreement with the Maryland Board of Physicians or Maryland Board of Nursing. Under physician supervision, the APP will:
    • Deliver diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive healthcare services to critically ill patients.
    • Gather medical histories, conduct patient examinations, perform daily rounds, order and interpret diagnostic tests, establish initial diagnoses, and recommend treatments.
    • Engage in effective communication with attending physicians, other medical teams, colleagues, and patients and their families.
    • Administer therapeutic procedures such as the placement of intracranial monitoring systems, extraventricular drains, VP shunt taps, suturing, and wound care.
    • Provide patient education and counseling.
    • May assist in surgical procedures when required.
  • Exhibit proficiency and skill in necessary tasks and procedures.
    • Demonstrate knowledge and competency in the required subspecialty.
    • Complete a minimum of 50 hours of Category I CME every two years, including 32 hours of trauma-related CME.
    • Adhere to standards set by the Maryland Board of Physicians or Board of Nursing and follow procedural protocols outlined in the expanded job description.
  • Promote excellence in quality assurance and patient care as part of our High Reliability Organization.
    • Ensure optimal patient care quality while adhering to safety protocols.
    • Maintain a procedure complication rate below the national average.
    • Foster positive group dynamics; utilize open communication to address issues within and between departments.
    • Demonstrate a commitment to the core values of the professional department and organization.
Qualifications
  • For PAs: A Bachelor's degree, graduation from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program, and certification from the National Commission of Certification of Physician's Assistants are mandatory. Candidates must possess an active Maryland license through the Maryland Board of Physicians.
  • For NPs: A Bachelor's degree, RN experience, and completion of an Acute Nurse Practitioner program are required. Candidates must hold an active Maryland license through the Maryland Board of Nursing.
  • Preferred: One year of experience in neurosurgery or neurocritical care.
  • Credentialing must be obtained from UM Capital Region Health's Medical Staff Office.
  • Maintenance of BLS/ACLS certification is essential; ATLS certification is preferred.
  • Compensation will be based on clinical experience.
