Refractory Technician

North American Construction Services, Ltd. is seeking a skilled Refractory Technician to join our team in Birmingham, AL.

Our team is responsible for designing and constructing cutting-edge furnaces, providing retrofits and upgrades, and offering full lifecycle service and maintenance on vessels, ovens, launders, holders, and other industrial equipment. We offer fully-integrated, turnkey solutions that fuse innovative energy and expertise to yield performance-enhancing results and advancements in thermal processes.

Key Responsibilities:

• Reading blueprints or job specifications to perform various welding tasks.
• Laying and aligning firebricks, gunite, castables, and refractory tile to build or repair structures or high-temperature equipment.
• Using and maintaining refractory tools and equipment.
• Tearing out refractory masonry.
• Laying refractory bricks.
• Installing poured castables.
• Installing gunnable castables, shotcrete, and lining with ceramic welding.
• Installing refractory material by plastic ramming.
• Recording keeping up to date, including quality control, mixed temperatures, and times cards.
• Performing work of a quality level consistent with Fives North American Construction Services standard practice.
• Conforming to OSHA and Company safety plan, including wearing personal protective devices.
• Operating refractory pumps, gunite rigs, refractory mixers, forklifts, skid steers, and other equipment.

Requirements:

• Basic understanding of construction principles and procedures.
• Experience with firebrick, castable, plastics, ceramics, gunnite, shotcrete/pump, anchor welding for thermal process applications.
• 2+ years of construction experience.
• Must have own hand tools and reliable transportation.
• Ability to recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools.
• Work on various types of refractory construction projects.
• Skill in all phases of refractory construction, including gunite, pouring, ramming, pumping, ceramic fiber, and firebrick installation.
• High School Diploma or GED Certificate preferred.
• Vocational school training or apprenticeship training preferred.
• Ability to travel 50-75%.
