Job Overview

The Grounds Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing essential tasks related to the upkeep of outdoor spaces, including mowing and trimming around municipal properties and public rights-of-way. This role requires a solid understanding of various manual and powered tools, equipment, and machinery. Workers will encounter diverse environmental conditions, including dirt, dust, rain, and pollen, as well as extreme weather variations. Flexibility for on-call and weekend duties may be necessary, along with occasional reassignment to different teams.

Reporting Structure:

  1. The Grounds Maintenance Worker primarily reports to the Grounds Crew Leader but may also receive direction from other supervisory personnel, including Crew Leaders and the Public Works Foreman.
  2. This position does not involve supervising other employees.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Perform essential tasks as outlined in this job description, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  2. Utilize both power and hand-operated equipment for mowing and trimming duties on City properties.
  3. Maintain and care for all tools and equipment used in daily operations.
  4. Adhere to City and Department policies, procedures, and supervisor instructions.
  5. Communicate effectively with supervisors, colleagues, and the public to exchange information and address inquiries.
  6. Exercise sound judgment and decision-making in job-related matters.
  7. Demonstrate a helpful and courteous attitude in all interactions.
  8. Timely report any issues or concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
  9. Maintain punctual and regular attendance at the job site.
  10. Be available for emergency duties outside of regular working hours as needed.
  11. Show initiative and diligence in completing all assigned tasks.
  12. Safeguard City property and report any necessary repairs.
  13. Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  14. Uphold confidentiality regarding all City operations.
  15. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

High School diploma, GED, or equivalent required.

Must possess and maintain a valid Texas Class C Driver License with a satisfactory driving record.

Successful completion of pre-employment background checks and medical evaluations is required.

Required Skills and Abilities:

The Grounds Maintenance Worker must meet the following physical and mental requirements:

  1. Ability to work safely and follow both oral and written instructions.
  2. Familiarity with janitorial tools and supplies.
  3. Capability to perform physically demanding tasks.
  4. Ability to learn and retain job-related information.
  5. Engage in repetitive motions, including operating lawn care equipment.
  6. Utilize hand tools and power equipment, and perform minor repairs as needed.
  7. Work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  8. Lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  9. Maintain balance and perform various physical activities such as walking, kneeling, and reaching.
  10. Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  11. Climb ladders and work at heights as required.
  12. Drive vehicles as necessary for job duties.
  13. Work extended hours when required.
  14. Respond to emergencies or unusual conditions as needed.

Physical and Mental Demands:

The Worker must be capable of:

  1. Engaging in strenuous physical labor.
  2. Maintaining balance and performing various physical tasks unassisted.
