This role is designed for individuals who are reachable on the appropriate Civil Service list for Food Service Worker II or are eligible for transfer.
Program Information:
This position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). During the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled through a non-competitive appointment, meaning no examination is required, but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for the title they are applying for.
Employment Status:
Agencies may recruit and hire employees through temporary appointments. If a temporary NY HELPS employee performs satisfactorily, their appointment will transition from temporary to permanent non-competitive, pending Civil Service Commission Action, and the official probationary period will commence.
Future Employment Status:
Within one year of permanent appointment, it is anticipated that employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive status converted to competitive status without the need for an examination.
Employee Rights:
While serving in a permanent NY HELPS title, employees are eligible to participate in any promotional examination for which they qualify.
Minimum Qualifications:
Two years of relevant experience in commercial or institutional food preparation or food service.
Examples of Relevant Experience:
Experience in settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, school cafeterias, residential dining halls, restaurants, or diners. Responsibilities must include food preparation, food service, and ordering of food and non-food supplies.
Qualification Substitution:
Formal training in culinary arts or food service resulting in a certificate or degree may be credited towards the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Competencies:
Supervisory experience in institutional kitchen or food service operations. Proficiency in Meditech and Computrition. Strong understanding of HACCP procedures and safe food handling practices.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Preparation of food for all or part of meals.
- Supervision of Food Service Worker I staff.
- Participation in total quality management activities related to food quality and customer satisfaction.
- Documentation of supervisory and food preparation activities, including performance evaluations of subordinate employees and HACCP-related documentation, along with other assigned duties.
Competencies for this position must be successfully passed. Some roles may require additional credentials or a background check to verify identity.
