Position Overview

MasTec Inc. is in search of a Senior Cost Estimation Specialist to oversee comprehensive project cost evaluations for our operations. This role will serve as the primary estimating authority on a variety of projects. Key responsibilities encompass attending pre-bid meetings as necessary, conducting site assessments, managing bids, formulating cost projections, assessing subcontractor and supplier pricing, and performing risk assessments. You will be supported by junior estimators who will assist with quantity takeoff analyses and an estimating coordinator who will manage outreach to subcontractors and vendors, qualification requirements, and documentation for minority participation. Our Estimating Team thrives in a collaborative setting, benefiting from contributions by our Operations Team. We prioritize a robust work ethic while promoting a healthy work-life balance.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in civil construction estimation. A solid understanding of roadway construction, excavation, underground utilities, contractual obligations, conceptual estimating, design schematics, and project specifications is essential. Familiarity with risk assessment and a proven track record in estimating across various markets and regions, particularly in Texas, is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

This role includes a bonus structure, relocation support, and a vehicle allowance with a fuel card and toll tag.

Work Environment

This position is primarily onsite, with potential for hybrid work arrangements evaluated on a case-by-case basis following an initial assessment period.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough quantity take-offs.
  • Define project scope for both self-performed and subcontracted tasks.
  • Analyze project documentation to produce clear, comprehensive, and competitive estimates, including general conditions and bid clarifications.
  • Communicate project requirements and owner directives to preconstruction teams, devising plans to achieve established objectives.
  • Simultaneously manage multiple projects.
  • Develop value engineering strategies to align with client budgets.
  • Identify and evaluate subcontractors.
  • Participate in preconstruction discussions with design teams and clients.
  • Address design ambiguities with assumptions that reflect the engineer's intent.
  • Prepare project clarifications and bid assumptions for client submission.
  • Examine local market conditions and their effects on costs.
  • Organize and coordinate effectively.
  • Attend relevant technical and professional meetings and seminars.
  • Establish timelines and objectives for timely estimate submissions.
  • Represent the company's vision when engaging with potential clients, showcasing MasTec's capabilities.
  • Ensure service quality meets project specifications.
  • Facilitate effective communication and collaboration on estimates across all disciplines and stakeholders.
  • Provide risk and cost comparison analysis on estimates.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or equivalent experience with 7+ years in civil construction estimating, or 10+ years of experience in lieu of formal education.
  • Proven knowledge of heavy civil construction, particularly in earthwork, underground utilities, drainage, and street/highway construction.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience with self-perform work.
  • Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret plans and specifications.
  • Preferred experience with Agtek earthwork take-off software and HCSS Heavy Bid estimating software.
  • Willingness to collaborate in a team-oriented environment.
