Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

This role involves rigorous physical labor in the collection of waste, recyclables, and yard debris, as well as the operation of large waste collection vehicles. Responsibilities include the efficient and safe collection of diverse waste materials across various designated routes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collects and disposes of refuse, recyclable materials, and yard waste into collection vehicles, including smaller debris.
  • Operates equipment for loading, compacting, and unloading waste materials, and drives trucks for waste collection tasks.
  • Conducts daily inspections of assigned waste collection vehicles and reports any mechanical issues or defects to the supervisor.
  • Cleans and maintains trucks and equipment as required.
  • Transports waste and recycling materials to designated disposal sites and properly disposes of them.
  • Assists in the collection of large bulky items such as discarded appliances and furniture.
  • Participates in street maintenance or cleanup activities as assigned.
  • Interacts with the public in a polite and professional manner.
  • Adheres to safety protocols and procedures while performing job duties.
  • Completes additional related tasks as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Understanding of occupational hazards and standard safety measures relevant to the work.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to learn and follow collection routes, schedules, and policies, and to understand and execute both oral and written instructions.
  • Capability to perform demanding physical tasks for extended periods, including in challenging weather conditions.
  • Willingness to work overtime when required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Two to three years of experience in operating and maintaining large trucks is preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a B endorsement.
