Position Purpose:
The Transitional Housing Support Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering housing assistance services for the Fort Lauderdale Independence Center. This position acts as a knowledgeable resource, advocate, and intermediary to facilitate access to affordable housing for youth in Broward County. The ideal candidate will possess the skills to evaluate community needs and identify suitable living arrangements for youth within the Transitional Independent Living System.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a bridge between youth, support personnel, and housing providers to secure stable living arrangements.
- Conduct thorough prescreening and intake assessments to ensure housing options are suitable for each young individual.
- Provide in-home support, delivering personalized life skills training in areas such as cooking, cleaning, budgeting, and appointment scheduling.
- Coordinate Housing Life Skills workshops and distribute incentives to participants as necessary.
- Assist participants in achieving their goals outlined in their Individual Service Plans.
- Advocate for the needs and rights of young individuals.
- Help participants locate resources related to housing, education, vocational training, and health services.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation for program tracking and grant reporting.
- Be available for on-call support to address housing needs, including evenings and weekends.
- Manage the intake of donated household items.
- Participate in regular supervision and case conferences as required.
- Administer assessments and surveys to evaluate client satisfaction and progress.
- Review and manage clients' budgets monthly, including collecting rent contributions when applicable.
- Document and report incidents related to runaways, hospitalizations, or legal violations in collaboration with program leadership.
- Engage in meetings and events focused on housing, homelessness, and youth advocacy.
- Provide ongoing support and follow-up to ensure participants' needs are met.
- Maintain regular contact with participants to promote stability in their housing situations.
- Conduct monthly property inspections for clients.
- Foster relationships with landlords and housing partners through bi-monthly communication.
- Identify and pursue new housing opportunities to broaden options for participants.
- Refer participants to additional agencies and community resources as needed.
- Contribute to grant applications and funding initiatives as required.
- Adhere to the ethical standards set forth by the National Association of Social Workers.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the organization's mission.
Qualifications:
- Ability to pass a level 2 background check.
- Bachelor's degree in Social Work or a related field is required; a Master's degree is preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in housing or real estate development is preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in social services or child welfare is preferred; a combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Experience working with youth populations such as the homeless, human trafficking survivors, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those in the foster care system.
- Proficient in case documentation and note-taking.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain community and business relationships.
- Flexibility in scheduling, including availability for nights and weekends.
- Proficient in computer applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Must possess a vehicle and be able to transport youth and supplies.
- Ability to lift items up to 50 pounds and engage in physical activities as required.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing; proficiency in additional languages is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
- Regularly required to stand, reach, stoop, kneel, and walk.
- Occasionally required to lift items not exceeding 50 pounds.
- Ability to provide hands-on life skills instruction in various settings.
