POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under the supervision of the Aquatic Director, Pool Manager, and/or Senior Lifeguard, the Aquatic Safety Officer is tasked with ensuring a secure, inviting, and hygienic environment for all members and participants within the aquatic facilities. This role includes responding to emergencies and administering CPR/AED, First Aid, and Oxygen as per certification standards. Aquatic Safety Officers must remain vigilant and easily identifiable at all times while maintaining a professional appearance. They are expected to operate at peak efficiency in all aspects of the aquatic department as assigned and demonstrate behaviors and attitudes that align with the YMCA Mission and policies of the Association.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implement preventative lifeguarding by promptly enforcing pool regulations and conducting routine inspections of the pool and deck area throughout their shift.
- Inspect, clean, and properly store necessary safety equipment, reporting any issues to the Aquatic Director or designated personnel immediately.
- Ensure the security of the pool area at all times, which includes locking and unlocking doors and gates to manage access to aquatic zones.
- Maintain cleanliness in and around the aquatic facility and its surroundings.
- Monitor the chemical balance of the pool and document findings on appropriate forms, reporting any concerns to the Aquatic Director or designated personnel immediately.
- Provide uninterrupted supervision of the pool while on duty, demonstrating vigilant scanning techniques, covering 180 degrees every 10 seconds to check the bottom, middle, and top of their designated area.
- Adhere to Association policies and procedures regarding the safety, health, and welfare of members, program participants, guests, and staff.
- Understand and execute rescue and emergency procedures, documenting incidents on the proper forms and communicating with the Aquatic Director or designated personnel as outlined in the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) in a timely manner, in accordance with aquatic facility policies and certification requirements.
- Keep accurate records of hours worked and take responsibility for arranging substitutes for any absences.
- Engage in positive public relations with participants, members, and guests to ensure a favorable experience.
- Comply with Association operating policies and procedures by conducting programs within the established guidelines, including swim test protocols.
- May assist a certified swim lesson instructor with class instruction as directed by the Aquatics Director or designated personnel.
- Attend and actively participate in all training sessions, staff meetings, in-services, and lifeguard drills as assigned.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience:
- Must be at least 15 years of age.
- If 15 years old, must work alongside an 18+ year old lifeguard unless an Aquatic Director and/or Full-Time Pool Manager is present during the entire shift.
- Proficient in swimming as determined by passing a swim test.
- Ability to foster positive, authentic relationships with diverse groups and individuals.
- Represent the YMCA positively.
- Must possess and maintain current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, including Oxygen. (If holding YMCA Lifeguard certification, must transition to ARC within 60 days of employment).
- Must possess and maintain current CPR/AED (in compliance with Lifeguard certification), First Aid, and Oxygen certifications.
- May be required to obtain additional certifications as mandated by the Aquatics Director or designated personnel.
