Job Title: Speech Language Pathologist Assistant

McDowell County Schools is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Speech Language Pathologist Assistant to join our team.

Job Summary:

The Speech Language Pathologist Assistant will work under the supervision of a licensed speech-language pathologist to provide clinical-educational services for students with speech-language disorders. The successful candidate will be responsible for administering direct and indirect intervention, transporting students, and communicating with students and professionals to meet their emotional needs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Administer screening protocols and therapeutic treatment protocols written by the speech-language pathologist.
  • Communicate with students and other professionals to meet the emotional needs of students.
  • Obtain case histories and complete observation checklists.
  • Manage behavior using appropriately designed management techniques.
  • Summarize and record target behaviors during therapy sessions.
  • Complete random moment in time studies as required by MAC program guidelines.
Requirements:
  • Completion of an Associate's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology Assisting from an accredited institution of higher learning, community college, or equivalent program.
  • Evidence of successful completion of a competency test approved by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists.
  • Registration as an assistant with the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists.
Working Conditions:

The Speech Language Pathologist Assistant will work in a school setting, interacting with students, teachers, and other professionals. The successful candidate must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and tools, including computer software and hardware.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology, normal communication development, phonetics, developmental psychology, and various types of disabilities seen in schoolchildren.
  • Working knowledge of behavioral management practices and the operation of schools.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, and professionals.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
