Cardiologist Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide exceptional inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular care, including care coordination, echocardiogram reading, population management, and oversight of PCP's cardiovascular skills.
  • Lead a cardiovascular care team, including Care Promoters, Echocardiogram/X-ray Technicians, and mid-level providers (ARNP or PA) as needed.
  • Assist the Medical Director, Cardiology in managing day-to-day clinical and business operations, building relationships with providers and stakeholders, and ensuring compliance with guidelines.
  • Consult with the Medical Director, Cardiology to participate in risk and quality management programs, clinical meetings, and other initiatives that maximize clinical value, improve quality, efficiency, and physician/patient satisfaction.
  • Manage the care of chronic cardiovascular diseases, examining patients, running or ordering tests, and recommending treatment plans as indicated by patient condition.
  • Assess patient's ability to withstand stresses of cardiovascular or other surgeries, helping surgeons or invasive cardiologists manage strategy for patient care.
  • Run and accurately read EKG, chest X-rays, and echoes, ordering studies, tests, and other ancillary services as needed.
  • Limit external cardiovascular care where high-quality internal care can be provided to members.
  • Prescribe medication and treatment in accordance with patient condition, payer coverage/guidelines, and industry standards.
  • Review PCP requests for external cardiology referrals, participate in delegated utilization authorizations, and determine level of urgency for follow-up, referral/consultation appointments.
  • May have responsibility for cardiology clinical operations of 2-5 centers in the market, under the supervision of the MD, CVC.
  • Exercise final medical judgment in issues of healthcare for paneled patients.
  • Provide patient education related to heart disease, wellness, prevention, and early detection, supporting market CHF clinics and other patient education initiatives.
  • Assist with training and hiring of dedicated cardiology Care Promoters and NPs/PAs.
  • Coach and mentor PCP physicians and other clinicians in cardiology management in the PCP setting.
  • Participate in cardiovascular team meetings and daily huddles, and participate in focused clinical discussions in market huddles, super-huddles, and team meetings.
  • Aid with quality and performance initiatives, assist with implementation of cost reduction and market clinical strategies, and build relationships with internal and external physician stakeholders.
Requirements:
  • MD or DO in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Geriatrics, or similar specialty required.
  • Board certification in Cardiology required, with other sub-specialty training and board certification also acceptable.
  • Current, unrestricted, and active license to practice medicine in the state of employment.
  • Current DEA and DPS Certificate of Registration required.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience as a Cardiologist required.
  • Prior experience working with interdisciplinary teams in quality improvement and/or medical/healthcare leadership activities preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AMA) or American Red Cross required within the first 90 days of employment.
