Position Summary

As a High School Mathematics Educator at Uncommon, you will collaborate with grade and content teams to foster self-directed learning among students. Our educators become proficient in their subject matter and possess a strong ability to motivate and inspire high school learners. A genuine passion for mathematics is central to our teaching approach. Math educators employ diverse instructional methods to help students develop problem-solving skills and perseverance. By the end of high school, students will be equipped for independent academic pursuits and college-level coursework.

Key Responsibilities

1. Instructional Duties

  • Utilize a comprehensive Math curriculum to teach subjects such as Algebra, Geometry, or Calculus, preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) and college-level studies.
  • Assist students in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Inspire confidence and engagement in mathematics through your enthusiasm for the subject.
  • Encourage students to construct and justify logical arguments using mathematical reasoning and vocabulary.
  • Create a supportive environment that promotes self-guided learning, ensuring students feel secure and engaged.
  • Collaborate with the Math department to set academic and engagement objectives for students.

2. Data-Driven Instruction

  • Engage in weekly meetings with your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze student performance data and identify trends.
  • Implement strategies to tailor instruction to meet the diverse needs of all learners in your classroom.

3. Fostering School Culture

  • Build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel valued and understood.
  • Collaborate with families to provide necessary resources that support student learning.
  • Participate in professional development, mentorship, and coaching opportunities.
  • Engage in weekly school-wide meetings to strengthen community ties, model core values, and promote student success.
  • Work with your grade-level team to establish academic goals and refine instructional strategies.
Qualifications
  • A strong commitment to the mission of Uncommon Schools and a dedication to anti-racist practices.
  • A proven track record of supporting students' social-emotional and academic growth.
  • An eagerness to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders for the benefit of students.
  • A self-motivated learner who actively seeks and applies feedback to enhance performance.
  • Required Experience:
    • A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban settings (1-2 years of experience preferred).
    • Academic expertise in Mathematics, Science, Technology, Engineering, or related fields.
    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required prior to employment. While certification is not mandatory for hiring, candidates must meet New York state certification eligibility requirements and enroll in a teacher preparation program if they do not possess a degree in education. Uncommon Schools educators are expected to obtain certification in New York within a reasonable timeframe after starting their role.
