Role Summary
As a vital member of the Celestica Global Automation team, you will leverage your extensive engineering experience to identify opportunities for assembly optimization and transform manual processes into efficient automated solutions. Your hands-on expertise in machinery design, robotics, PLC programming, and compliance with safety and global standards will be crucial. You will thrive in a collaborative environment, working alongside a team to establish the requirements and specifications necessary for developing top-tier equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop automation solutions that align with both universal and site-specific automation objectives.
- Provide technical expertise in defining adaptable and scalable automation systems.
- Create tools and methodologies to support automation initiatives.
- Engage with clients and internal/external design teams to address specific automation requirements.
Primary Duties
- Evaluate all facets of the manufacturing process to identify automation needs.
- Prepare Requests for Proposals/Quotes for automation projects and assist throughout the Project Life Cycle.
- Train regional and site engineering teams on automation practices.
- Enhance existing automation systems through continuous improvement efforts.
- Support customer automation requirements during New Product Introduction (NPI) and product transitions.
- Coordinate subsystem designs and integrate comprehensive automation systems for designated processes.
- Act as an automation consultant for regional engineering teams and clients.
- Collaborate with automation specialists to deliver innovative solutions.
- Oversee project management to ensure timely and budget-compliant execution, including:
- Maintaining communication with all stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
- Creating documentation for project phases: Charter, Statement of Work, test plans, acceptance criteria, and project closure.
- Regularly tracking and reporting project timelines and financials.
- Managing changes, risks, and communications effectively.
- Facilitating decision-making and problem-solving processes.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies
- Proficient in equipment engineering and manufacturing operations, including ESD controls, component preparation, robotic soldering, and mechanical assembly techniques.
- Expertise in electrical and mechanical design for automation, PLC programming, and machine safety standards.
- Thorough understanding of drafting principles, with proficiency in AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare customer documentation.
- Commitment to adhering to health and safety regulations.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Travel Expectations
Travel to vendor and site locations is anticipated to be less than 50-75% of the time, though this may increase during critical project phases.
Physical Requirements
This role is primarily office-based, requiring extended periods of sitting and focused visual concentration on computer screens and detailed data. Occasional travel may be necessary.
Experience and Education
- A minimum of 7-10 years in automation design within a machine integration context, with experience in conceptualizing machines from small to large-scale systems.
- Basic knowledge of printed circuit board assembly and electronics manufacturing is advantageous.
- Familiarity with project management tools such as MS Project or Smartsheet is preferred.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a related field is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- CAPM/PMP project management certification is a plus.
- Fluency in English and Spanish is essential; proficiency in additional languages is beneficial.
