Quantitative Analyst for Political Harassment

2 months ago

Princeton, New Jersey, United States InsideHigherEd Full time
Position Overview

The Bridging Divides Initiative (BDI) is dedicated to researching and addressing political violence across the United States. Our mission is to enhance community resilience during elections and other critical periods, fostering a foundation for long-term solutions to the divides we encounter as a nation.

BDI's Understanding Threats and Harassment against Local Officials project, initiated in 2022, aims to provide reliable data on the emerging trends of threats and harassment directed at local officials. The Threats and Harassment Dataset (THD) is a key component of this initiative, designed to track incidents of threats and harassment, thereby enabling the monitoring of risks faced by these officials.

We are currently seeking a full-time, remote Threats and Harassment Dataset Researcher. This role involves active participation in the development and upkeep of the dataset and associated research outputs. The position is intended for a minimum engagement of one year, with potential for extension. The researcher will collaborate closely with the project team, reporting directly to the Threats and Harassment Project Manager.

Your contributions will yield valuable data that clarifies the landscape of threats and harassment encountered by local officials, empowering decision-makers to make informed, evidence-based choices in response to these challenges.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in data collection, coding, and various tasks related to the Threats and Harassment Dataset (THD), ensuring its regular updates and accuracy;
  • Provide administrative support, including the organization of project documentation such as methodology papers and training resources;
  • Engage in data visualization and analysis to support the Understanding Threats and Harassment to Local Officials project;
  • Deliver timely support to BDI's research team, providing custom analyses and addressing urgent inquiries related to the project.
QualificationsRequired
  • Experience in research focused on the landscape of political violence in the U.S.
  • Proficiency in managing large datasets, particularly event-based data;
  • Strong skills in data gathering, database maintenance, and analysis;
  • Exceptional writing capabilities;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a remote team environment;
  • Commitment to supporting civil society initiatives addressing political violence across diverse political and geographical contexts;
  • Ability to adapt quickly in a dynamic work setting, responding effectively to real-time data needs;
  • 1-2+ years of relevant research or policy experience;
  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related discipline.
Preferred
  • Experience in maintaining data documentation and ensuring data quality;
  • Familiarity with remote work tools (e.g., Slack, Zoom, Asana);
  • Strategic and creative thinking regarding data analysis, including identifying trends and gaps;
  • Expertise in conducting open-source intelligence (OSINT) monitoring through various media.

Benefits

  • Generous vacation and holiday policy;
  • Health insurance options, including vision and dental coverage;
  • Retirement contributions and plans;
  • Education support for professional development;
  • Wellness resources for employees and their families.

Work Authorization: This position requires U.S. work authorization and is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

BDI values diversity and is committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
