The City of Sunnyvale is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Accounting Technician within the Finance Department. This position is currently available in the Utility Billing, Business License, and Cashiering division.

The established eligibility list will serve for current and future vacancies in the Utility Billing, Business License, and Cashiering division.


Under the general oversight of a designated supervisor, the Accounting Technician will deliver technical accounting assistance in various areas, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, cashiering, auditing, and revenue collections. Responsibilities include managing daily operations, processing financial data, handling checks, addressing exceptions, and responding to inquiries.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties may include, but are not limited to:

1. Executing a range of technical accounting tasks related to the preparation, maintenance, and processing of financial records and transactions.
2. Utilizing computerized accounting systems to process, code, enter, and retrieve financial data.

3. Verifying accounting entries and maintaining reconciled financial records pertinent to assigned functions such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, cashiering, auditing, and revenue collections.

4. Addressing inquiries from other departments and the public, investigating discrepancies, and following up on outstanding issues.

5. Collaborating with staff to resolve disputes.
6. Interpreting applicable rules, regulations, policies, ordinances, and laws related to job functions.
7. Performing cashiering duties, including processing checks, balancing cash drawers, and verifying daily cash receipts.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT


This position involves prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping during daily activities. It also requires repetitive hand movements and fine motor skills for computer use. Near and far vision is necessary for reading reports and documents, and acute hearing is essential for providing customer service. The role may require lifting, dragging, and pushing files and documents weighing up to 10 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for qualified individuals.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
The minimum qualifications for this position include:

- High school graduation or equivalent AND


- Two years of technical accounting support experience, with at least one year in a relevant functional area, including automated financial systems.

Knowledge Of

- Basic accounting principles and financial record-keeping practices.
- Functions of accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, cashiering, auditing, or revenue collections.
- Understanding of contracts, regulations, and laws relevant to job functions.
- Office methods, procedures, software, and equipment.
- Principles of customer service.

Ability To

- Maintain accurate records and files.
- Understand and apply relevant laws and procedures.
- Utilize computerized accounting systems for data input, inquiry, and report generation.
- Perform mathematical calculations using a calculator and 10-Key pad.
- Operate computers with word processing and business software.
- Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
- Foster positive working relationships with colleagues, public officials, and the community.
- Demonstrate initiative and sound judgment in performing duties.
- Work independently and collaboratively, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Adhere to safety principles and work in a safe manner.

Licenses/Certificates


- Possession and maintenance of a valid California driver's license or alternative approved transportation, along with a safe driving record.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

- College coursework in finance, accounting, or a related field.

EXAM PROCESS

SELECTION PROCESS


Candidates who pass the examination will be placed on an eligibility list for up to one year. Top candidates will be invited for a selection interview.


Selected candidates will undergo a pre-employment process, which may include a background check and medical examination.

All newly hired employees will be fingerprinted to check conviction history. A conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant; however, failure to disclose such history may result in employment refusal or termination.

Positions covered by Department of Transportation regulations will require a pre-employment drug test and random testing thereafter.


Proof of education will be required from successful candidates.
