Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the Clinical Director or Clinical Unit Leader, the Practical Nursing Specialist plays a vital role as part of the Patient Care Team. This position involves executing patient care responsibilities as assigned by the Registered Nurse (RN).

The role requires a comprehensive understanding of the necessary skills to evaluate, treat, and deliver care tailored to the age groups of the patients on the designated unit.

This position aligns with the Illinois Nurse Practice Act and the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice.


  • Delivers patient care under the guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN) in compliance with the State of IL Nurse Practice Act, focusing on the developmental stages of the patient: Aids the RN in various patient care tasks as directed. Administers medications as permitted by the RN and within their professional scope.
  • Gathers and records patient monitoring information. Observes, documents, and communicates any alterations in the patient's condition or environment to the RN. Updates the existing Care Plan after consulting with the RN.
  • Engages in effective communication with patients and healthcare team members. Relays information regarding patient care requirements to the appropriate healthcare personnel. Interacts positively and therapeutically with patients and their families, considering the developmental stages of the patient.
  • Shares accountability for the upkeep and management of equipment and supplies within the unit.
  • Actively participates in and promotes continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Complies with all standards, policies, and procedures set forth by Northshore.
