Microbiology Department Manager for Food Testing Laboratory

Deibel Laboratories is seeking a highly skilled Microbiology Department Manager to join our team in Madison, WI. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for ensuring the efficient operation of our microbiology department, including performing and coordinating all service calls to clients and answering client questions. You will also be responsible for ensuring the laboratory is sufficiently staffed, runs efficiently, and conforms to all current Quality Management Systems. Additionally, you will be responsible for ensuring our high Service & Quality standards are met and keeping our clients happy. The ideal candidate will have an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Microbiology, or a related field, and/or 1-3 years of experience in a related field. Knowledge of microbiology techniques and instruments, as well as the operation, maintenance, and minor repair of laboratory instruments, is also required. The successful candidate will be able to lift up to 50lbs occasionally and will be required to wear safety equipment such as gloves, laboratory coat, and eyeglasses. Responsibilities:
  • Perform all operations pertaining to current laboratory functions.
  • Perform and coordinate all Service Calls to clients and answer client questions.
  • Refer client to Technical Services for questions they cannot (or should not) answer.
  • Ensure the laboratory is sufficiently staffed, runs efficiently, and conforms to all current Quality Management Systems.
  • Ensure our high Service & Quality standards are met and keep our clients happy.
  • Ensure that the days' workload is covered with adequate staff, samples are completed in a timely manner, ideally without overtime; and all Micro samples are setup the same day they are received.
  • Perform on the spot re-training of associates, as needed; deviations noticed from improper technique results in the test being re-done.
  • Assist the Lab Manager in any way needed, or as directed.
Qualifications:
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Microbiology, or related and/or 1-3 years of experience in a related field, preferred but not required.
  • A combination of both education and experience will be considered.
  • Knowledge of microbiology techniques and instruments such as BAX systems, 3M MDS, plate readers and autoclaves.
  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and minor repair of laboratory instruments.
Physical Requirements:
  • Safety equipment of gloves, laboratory coat, and eyeglasses may need to be worn depending on the testing process.
  • Extended time spent in a standing position.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs occasionally and lbs repeatedly.
