GENERAL OVERVIEW:

Under minimal supervision and in accordance with established protocols, the role involves executing a range of laboratory support tasks, which include specimen acquisition, order processing, point-of-care assessments, and the transportation of laboratory materials. A significant portion of the responsibilities will include blood sample collection, constituting at least 25% of scheduled work hours. The position requires courteous and professional interaction with patients, laboratory personnel, and caregivers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare patient specimens for laboratory analysis, focusing on both pre-analytic and post-analytic phases.
  • Input patient demographic details and test orders into laboratory information systems promptly and in accordance with training protocols, ensuring confidentiality of patient data. Address routine inquiries from patients and staff.
  • Conduct blood sample collection or phlebotomy as a primary responsibility, maintaining a standard of competency, efficiency, and empathy with all patients.
  • Adhere to HFHS Standards of Excellence to foster a culture of outstanding customer service during interactions with patients, colleagues, and caregivers.
  • Examine laboratory request forms for completeness and rectify any discrepancies as necessary, ensuring careful handling of specimens to maintain their identity and integrity.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow both written and verbal instructions, along with demonstrating exceptional customer service skills, is essential.
  • A minimum of six months of phlebotomy experience is required. New hires must successfully complete competency evaluations and demonstrate safety and proficiency with all patient demographics.
  • For roles necessitating off-site travel, candidates must hold a valid Michigan motor vehicle license and have reliable transportation with insurance.
  • Experience in a clinical or hospital laboratory setting is preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology is advantageous.
