Job Summary:

The City of Wilson, NC is seeking a skilled Water Treatment Plant Mechanic to join our team. This role is responsible for performing mechanical and maintenance duties in support of two water treatment plants and related facilities. Job Description:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems with electrical or mechanical equipment, performing corrective maintenance as needed.
  • Performs regular preventative maintenance on all equipment at water plants and associated sites.
  • Unloads bulk chemicals used in water treatment, ensuring a safe working environment.
  • Performs the work of Water Treatment Plant Operator when necessary, taking on additional responsibilities as assigned.
  • Installs and demonstrates equipment to upgrade the facility, staying up-to-date with the latest technologies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management, contributing to the overall success of the team.

Guidelines and Regulations:

  • Must adhere to federal, state, and local regulations, as well as city policies and standard operating procedures for the Water Treatment Division.
  • Must interpret and apply guidelines in a way that ensures the safety and quality of our drinking water.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school education or equivalent, plus specialized training in the field of work.
  • 1-2 years of experience in a similar position, with a strong understanding of the principles relevant to the major duties of the role.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated, as well as a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement within six months of hire.
  • Possession of an appropriate state-certified license for water or wastewater treatment or distribution, or ability to readily obtain one.

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical installation and repair.
  • Knowledge of the operation and repair of pumps, mixers, and chemical feed equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment used in water treatment, filtration, pumping, and storage.
  • Knowledge of the basic principles and practices of mechanical maintenance and repair.
  • Skill in the use of standard tools for installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Skill in the use of various types of lab equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • The work is typically performed at water treatment plants and related facilities, with occasional outdoor work in cold or inclement weather.
  • The work environment is often noisy, with exposure to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals.
  • The employee must wear protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves, and frequently lift light and heavy objects.
