Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the Technical Supervisor, the Medical Technologist II will perform high-complexity testing and interpret results in the Blood Bank Transfusion Service. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform moderate and high-complexity tests and interpret results
  • Act as a resource and interpret tests for laboratory users
  • Review testing and procedures performed by other staff to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies
  • Prioritize STAT and routine samples
  • Ensure accurate specimen identification and labeling
  • Ensure appropriateness of sample for requested testing
  • Perform instrument and equipment maintenance
  • Recognize instrument, equipment, or methodology problems and report to Assistant Supervisor or Supervisor
  • Perform and assess results of Quality Control activities
  • Recognize technical and non-technical problems/discrepancies in laboratory operations and report to Assistant Supervisor or Supervisor
  • Perform and interpret the validity of results of analytic procedures
  • Maintain clear, concise, accurate, and legible records of test performance
  • Provide proper documentation and records of all test procedures performed
  • Review patient results, recognize problems, and perform and document all additional or confirmatory testing necessary to justify reporting of patient result
  • Investigate, resolve to the extent possible, and document incidents of aberrant or inconsistent patient test results
  • Transcribe results/information with accuracy into LIS system
  • Append appropriate coded comments as required by section standard operating procedures
  • Use LIS to promote clarity and correct interpretation of laboratory results
  • Review entered LIS codes as required by section standard operating procedures for transcription accuracy prior to completing processing or reporting test results
  • Notify appropriate person of all Critical Alert Values
  • Notify appropriate person of all required call back of results
  • Maintain proficiency through validation and retraining for all designated LIS functions
  • Provide proper documentation of receipt and implementation of reagents/lots/materials upon receipt in lab
  • Ensure adequate Blood inventories are maintained according to standard operating procedure for section consistent with level of training and experience
  • Ensure all work is completed and/or accounted for according to section policy
  • Assist other laboratory sections as needed when directed by supervisory staff members
  • Participate in Quality Advancement/Quality Improvement activities
  • Perform specimen collection procedures as outlined in the Lab Support Services Phlebotomy Procedures
  • Maintain initial and annual competency documentation as outlined in section policies and procedures
  • Maintain age-specific competency for all tests/procedures performed as required by regulatory agencies
  • Attend departmental continuing education classes during the year
  • Participate in scientific or service-related continuing education classes
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings or, if unable, accept responsibility for reading meeting minutes during work time
  • Support education of Medical Technology students, Pathology residents, new staff, and others through participation in teaching activities
  • Support technical training of departmental staff members, encompassing new employees, and new procedures and cross-training
  • Participate on all Sectional, Departmental, or Hospital committees or task forces as available
  • Communicate all-important information regarding the laboratory to fellow staff members
  • Answer the telephone according to departmental policy; respond to inquiries/requests
  • Work cooperatively with other laboratory staff members and take initiative to determine where assistance is needed and render assistance
  • Report all incidents, safety hazards, or accidents to appropriate personnel
  • Attend mandatory safety education sessions to keep informed of changes regarding safety issues
  • Respect patient and employee confidentiality
  • Keep equipment and work area neat, orderly, and well-stocked; put supplies away when received
  • Perform assignments with a minimum of direction and be available to help others
  • Maintain open communication with Supervisors and Medical Directors
  • Plan and prioritize tasks and adjust to variable workloads
  • Assess the inventory on a weekly basis in assigned work area and notify Supervisor of supply needs
  • Utilize Medical Center's values as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate the division's mission
  • Follow established Hospital Infection Control and Safety procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned or as needed
