Job Summary

The Aquatics Staff Member will be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of our members while providing exceptional customer service. This includes performing lifeguard duties, instructing swimming lessons, and maintaining a safe and positive atmosphere in the pool area.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure Member Safety: Vigilantly scan the water and pool deck areas, monitor activities, identify safety issues and concerns, enforce rules, and follow YMCA emergency procedures and protocols.
  • Instruct Swimming Lessons: Teach basic and advanced stroke skills to youth members in a fun and engaging manner.
  • Perform Lifeguard Duties: Perform necessary rescue actions, administer first aid and CPR in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures, and complete related reports as required.
  • Prepare Lesson Plans: Develop and implement lesson plans that cater to the abilities and ages of the classes.
  • Communicate Safety Rules: Consistently communicate and apply safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic areas.
  • Attend Training and Certification Courses: Participate in monthly, quarterly, and/or annual training and certification courses to maintain and improve skills.
  • Build Relationships: Maintain effective and positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
Requirements
  • Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: Value and promote diversity and contribute to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Certifications: Possess current Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid, and Oxygen certifications.
  • Age and Experience: Be at least 16 years old and have six months or more of related aquatics experience (preferred).
  • Working with Youth: Have previous experience working with youth and diverse populations.
  • Training and Certification: Be able to take Child Abuse Prevention training on the first day and other online and in-person trainings as required.
  • Background and Reference Checks: Pass Background and Reference checks in accordance with the WA State Fair Chance Act.
Physical Demands

  • Vision and Hearing: See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility and hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment.
  • Alertness: Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
