Surgical and Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (SNICU)

The Surgical and Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (SNICU) stands as Iowa's largest intensive care unit, managing over 2,500 patients annually. This 36-bed facility is organized into three distinct bays and is staffed by a multidisciplinary team proficient in caring for critically ill surgical and neuroscience patients.

In addition to standard post-operative care, the SNICU addresses a variety of complex conditions, including:
  • Respiratory failure
  • Sepsis
  • Multi-system trauma
  • Peri-operative complications
  • Acute neurological injuries
  • Pre- and post-organ transplantation care
  • Pain management
The SNICU offers a comprehensive array of intensive care services, utilizing advanced monitoring technologies and equipment such as:
  • Pulmonary artery catheters
  • Arterial lines
  • Intracranial pressure monitoring and CSF drainage
  • Ventilatory support
  • Continuous infusion of vasoactive medications
  • Micro-vascular reconstruction care
  • Advanced neurological monitoring
  • Multiple renal replacement therapies (CRRT)
  • Nitric oxide therapy
  • Hypothermia management
  • Pentobarbital coma management

Key Responsibilities of Staff Nurses include:
  • Applying nursing theories to assess, diagnose, treat, and evaluate patient responses to health and illness
  • Assessing patient healthcare preferences and expectations
  • Coordinating the continuum of care collaboratively across various settings
  • Developing patient care plans tailored to individual conditions, ages, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic factors
  • Implementing patient care plans based on priorities, including interventions identified through nursing diagnoses, and documenting/reporting interventions and patient/family responses
  • Integrating contributions from patients and families into the multidisciplinary care plan
  • Coordinating and implementing transfer/discharge planning throughout the care episode
  • Executing nursing interventions in accordance with departmental, divisional, and unit policies to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff, while adhering to universal precautions
Work Schedule: 90% - 36 hours per week, with day shifts including weekend and holiday rotations.
Compensation: Minimum salary of $60,000 at 100% effort, with variations based on experience and effort percentage. Additional pay differentials for evening, night, and weekend shifts, as well as premium pay for shifts exceeding 4 hours.

Education Requirements:
  • An Associate's Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, or a Master's Degree in Nursing is required.
Experience Requirements:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills with patients, families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • A minimum of 3 years of current ICU experience is required.
  • General computer proficiency is necessary.
Certifications:
  • A current nursing license in Iowa is required by the date of hire.
  • Current ACLS certification is preferred.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or a Master's Degree in Nursing is highly preferred.
  • If a Baccalaureate degree is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program is desirable.
  • Familiarity with University policies and procedures is advantageous.
