Job Summary:

This position involves examining patients with a wide range of visual problems, diagnosing visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies, and prescribing treatment as licensed and credentialed. The role also involves referring patients to other appropriate Kaiser Permanente providers as needed for further evaluation and treatment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough eye exams using a range of optometry instruments and techniques.
  • Diagnose and treat visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies in accordance with state laws and regulations.
  • Prescribe and fit contact lenses to meet the visual needs of patients.
  • Determine the visual requirements of patients with partial sight and prescribe low-vision aids as needed.
  • Use diagnostic pharmaceutical agents to detect and diagnose ocular pathology in certain states or jurisdictions.
  • Identify ocular signs of systemic diseases and medications through examination techniques.
  • Refer patients to other Kaiser Permanente providers as needed for further evaluation and treatment.
  • Participate in departmental and educational meetings, including peer review activities.
  • Consult with internal medicine, pediatrics, and ophthalmology teams on patient care issues.
  • Develop and implement eye care education programs for medical center staff and patients.
  • Manage anterior segment disorders in collaboration with ophthalmologists.

Work Environment:

This is a full-time position with 50% travel between Kensington and Gaithersburg locations, with one required Saturday per month.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of Optometry.
  • Enrollment in PECOS within 90 days of hire date.
  • Optometrist License (Maryland, Virginia, or District of Columbia).
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
  • National Provider Identifier.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years of experience in an interdisciplinary healthcare environment or successful completion of an accredited residency program.
  • Accredited residency in Optometry.
