Purpose:
As a Natural Gas Operations Technician, you will engage in a variety of technical tasks associated with the management of the Company’s natural gas distribution infrastructure.

Your responsibilities will encompass both Damage Prevention initiatives and the Cathodic Protection program aimed at safeguarding natural gas facilities.

You will be tasked with monitoring and maintaining corrosion control systems through testing, inspections, repairs, and overseeing related projects.

You will apply your knowledge of Cathodic Protection principles and natural gas distribution systems effectively.

Additionally, you will perform damage prevention tasks by locating and marking underground natural gas facilities, reviewing utility mapping records, and updating them as necessary.

Your role will require collaboration with various stakeholders, including contractors, government entities, utility partners, and public works departments, to ensure the integrity of underground gas distribution systems.


Key Responsibilities - Damage Prevention

- Interpret and analyze distribution maps and records to identify the location of underground facilities.
- Respond to Dig Safe Tickets to conduct accurate mark-outs of natural gas facilities.
- Safely locate and mark underground facilities related to distribution operations as required.
- Investigate and report on damages within the natural gas distribution system.
- Utilize a personal computer or laptop to access information regarding excavation locations.
- Operate electronic devices designed for locating subsurface gas utilities.
- Conduct field visits to construction sites to ensure the protection of gas distribution facilities.
- Perform inspections of third-party excavations.
- Engage with construction contractors.
- Review Dig Safe Inspection tickets.
- Provide guidance on excavation activities near gas infrastructure.
- Update sketches of existing facilities that are inaccurately recorded in distribution records.
- Undertake other damage prevention-related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

- High school diploma, trade school graduate, or equivalent required.
- Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
- Must obtain necessary licenses, certificates, and operator qualifications.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and physical capability to perform job duties.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions with minimal supervision.
- Competent in reading mechanical drawings and updating mapping records.
- Basic understanding of electrical circuits and instrumentation.
- Familiarity with the distribution system is essential.
- Proficient in using computer technology (iPad, laptop, etc.).
- Professional representation of the company is expected.
- Availability for emergency response during and after hours is required.
- Knowledge of distribution system construction and operation of related equipment and tools is necessary.

Corrosion Control Responsibilities

- Conduct and document annual survey readings and inspections for the Corrosion department:
- Short sections of Mains & Services (10% surveys).
- Annual testing for Galvanic & Impressed current cathodic systems.
- Initial readings for new steel installations.
- Atmospheric corrosion inspections (Bridges/aboveground piping).
- Bimonthly rectifier readings.
- Locate and maintain test point boxes.
- Perform minor excavations to access test point boxes.
- Update corrosion control records as necessary.

Operate instruments for corrosion control work, including Multi meter, Half-cell, Collins Rod, and Interrupter, PCM.

Provide initial troubleshooting and repair recommendations based on testing findings.
- Inspect and update records related to repairs in the Cathodic protection system.
- Perform other corrosion-related duties as assigned.

Step Qualification:
- Technical Operations Mechanic I – 24-month progression
- Completion of NACE/AMPP CP- Cathodic Protection Tester Certificate program.
- Fulfillment of all OQ requirements for Technical Operations Mechanic II.

Geographic Field Base Reporting:
Technicians may be assigned to work areas outside of the Pittsfield distribution center as needed.

During assignments outside of the Pittsfield distribution center, technicians may have the option to take a company vehicle home.

Technicians must report to their assigned work area at the scheduled start time.
