POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of designated management, the Campus Safety Officer is responsible for executing law enforcement and crime deterrence duties; ensuring the safety of college staff, students, and the wider community; monitoring and securing college facilities, and maintaining public order.

A lateral Campus Safety Officer is required to successfully complete a P.O.S.T certified on-the-job training program and fulfill a probationary period of twelve months.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Conduct regular patrols of campus facilities and grounds on foot, bicycle, or vehicle.

- Respond to calls concerning the protection of individuals, property, and the enforcement of applicable laws.

- Ensure the safety of individuals and manage crowds during events or disturbances.

- Investigate incidents and compile detailed reports on accidents, property damage, law violations, thefts, and disturbances.

- Collect evidence and interview relevant parties.

- Detain offenders and provide testimony in legal proceedings as required.

- Safeguard property against fire, theft, vandalism, and unauthorized access.

- Provide information and assistance to the public.

- Administer first aid when necessary.

- Assist in educating college personnel on security protocols.

- May oversee other security staff as needed.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

KNOWLEDGE OF:

- Law enforcement and investigative techniques.

- Criminal statutes, particularly regarding the apprehension and custody of individuals involved in criminal activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

- Applicants must be at least 21 years old at the time of application.

- Must be a U.S. Citizen or a permanent Resident Alien eligible for citizenship.

- Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.

- LATERAL: Must hold a California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate and/or a current P.O.S.T. requalification certificate, along with one year of full-time law enforcement experience.

- PRE-SERVICE: Graduation from a California P.O.S.T. certified police academy within the last three years or proof of a California P.O.S.T. requalification certificate.

- Must meet specific physical, psychological, and medical standards set by the college.

- Successfully complete a physical agility test, comprehensive background check, psychological evaluation, and polygraph examination.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Completion of sixty (60) college units or possession of an Associate Degree is highly desirable.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with a diverse population of students, staff, and the public; maintain a calm, fair, and respectful demeanor while performing law enforcement duties.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

- Candidates must pass a thorough medical examination.

- Must be in good physical condition, free from any medical conditions that could hinder job performance.

- VISION: Minimum of 20/100 vision in each eye without correction, correctable to 20/30.

- COLOR VISION: Any significant color vision impairment is disqualifying.

- HEARING: No more than 25dB loss in the better ear across specified frequencies. Any unusual hearing loss will be assessed by a medical professional.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

- May require prolonged periods of sitting in a patrol vehicle.

- Ability to walk and move to various locations on campus.

- Physical activities may include running, jumping, crawling, climbing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 165 pounds.

- Availability for overtime during special events may be required.

- Responsible for the use of weapons as part of the job.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS

- This is a full-time, twelve-month classified position, contingent upon funding availability. Standard working hours are 12 hours per day, 40 hours per week. Selected candidates must be willing to work nights, holidays, and other irregular hours, committing to a minimum of five years of service.

- Employment is subject to verification of all information provided during the application process, including credentials and transcripts. Candidates must consent to fingerprinting, submit a Tuberculosis Risk Assessment Certificate, provide proof of employment eligibility in the U.S., and present a valid Social Security card upon hire.

- Retirement: Full-time employees contribute a portion of their salary to the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and Social Security. Previous service in another public retirement system may allow for continued eligibility.
