Role Overview:
The Part-Time Campus Safety Officer (CSO) is a vital role responsible for ensuring a secure and safe campus environment. The CSO will patrol campus buildings and grounds, respond to incidents and emergencies, and assist students, faculty, staff, and visitors with their safety and security needs. Reporting to the Director of Institute Operations, the CSO plays a key role in implementing preventive measures and emergency responses while providing exceptional customer service to promote the well-being of the campus community.
In addition, the CSO will enforce campus policies, manage front desk operations to ensure compliance with visitor policies, monitor surveillance systems, respond to alerts, and provide coverage during institute-sponsored events. This position requires collaboration with various departments to identify and mitigate potential safety and security risks. The CSO must maintain confidentiality, uphold high ethical standards, demonstrate cultural sensitivity, and interact effectively with a diverse campus population. Collaboration with local law enforcement and emergency services is also essential.
The ideal candidate will excel in customer service, build effective relationships, and demonstrate strong judgment and decision-making skills. A proactive approach to fostering a culture of safety awareness on campus is essential. Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary for effective incident reporting and community interaction. The candidate must remain composed in high-pressure situations and be proficient in utilizing technology-driven security solutions to protect the campus community, including access controls and surveillance technologies that prevent unauthorized access and safeguard valuable resources. Experience in emergency preparedness, incident response, and crisis management is crucial.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patrol and Surveillance: Conduct regular patrols of campus buildings, grounds, and parking areas; monitor surveillance systems and respond to alerts; identify and report safety hazards or security concerns.
- Incident Response: Respond promptly to emergency calls and incidents; provide first aid or CPR if necessary; document incidents and prepare reports for follow-up.
- Student and Staff Assistance: Assist students, faculty, and staff with safety-related inquiries; provide directions and support; foster a positive presence on campus.
- Policy Enforcement: Enforce campus policies and regulations; issue warnings for violations and escalate issues as needed; engage with the campus community to educate about safety measures.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other departments and local law enforcement to ensure coordinated responses to incidents; participate in regular safety strategy meetings.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in campus safety, security, emergency preparedness, or related fields.
- High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
- Valid driver's license.
- Current New York State armed security guard license preferred.
- EMT Certification preferred.
- Empathetic and service-oriented mindset.
- Strong crisis management and communication skills.

- Proficiency in security systems and technology.
