Medical Assistant

Job Summary
Under moderate supervision, the Medical Assistant performs a variety of front and back office duties in the clinic. The ideal candidate will provide initial preparation of patients prior to the physician's encounter, assist the physician in patient care activities, and perform procedures under the supervision of the physician.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the physician during physical exams and procedures.
- Ensure that charts for outside physicians are prepared for the day with appropriate forms and documentation.
- Assist staff with scheduling appointments, requesting medical information, test results, photocopying, filing, and other tasks as assigned.
- Assist with obtaining authorizations or referrals needed.
- Maintain patient charts and ensure information is filed/scanned accurately.
- Function as a collaborative team member, demonstrating a commitment to group goals and teamwork.
- Take vitals on all patients, including height, weight, blood pressure, and temperature.
- Complete patient history, medication documentation, and other orders as instructed by the provider.
- Perform point of care testing, phlebotomy, and specimen collection, and assist the providers with basic routine tests, injections, and procedures.
- Maintain clinical equipment and notify management of issues or concerns.
- Operate equipment in a safe and competent manner.
- Enter other pertinent patient data into the EMR as requested by the provider.
- Accurately document point of care results to ensure charges are sent by the close of business.
- Work within scope and with providers to answer patient phone questions and complete refill encounters with appropriate documentation in the chart or EMR.
- Answer phones, screen calls, and communicate messages accurately and in a timely manner.
- Restock and prepare exam rooms for the next day according to par levels, and notify the staff member responsible for ordering supplies when necessary.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- One year of back office experience or successful completion of a formal medical assistant training program required.
- Current BLS certification or obtained prior to providing direct patient care required.
- Certification as a Medical Assistant preferred.
- Previous experience using a business office suite, such as Microsoft Office, preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
Patient Safety
- Ensure patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department, or unit patient safety initiatives.
- Take action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
- Report adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
- Identify possible risks in processes, procedures, devices, and communicate the same to those in charge.
