Job Overview
Title: Success Coach (Academic Advising)
Position Type: Part-time
Salary: $19.00 per hour
Working Hours: This role requires up to 15 hours per week, with hours scheduled between 8 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. All work will be conducted on-site, with hours determined based on the needs of the Advising Center, employee availability, and current teaching responsibilities.
Position Summary:The Success Coach will act as a primary advisor for both new and existing students. This individual will possess knowledge of initial course placement, registration policies, financial aid basics, and campus resources, serving as the first point of contact for new students. Additionally, the role includes supporting current students through general advising, course selection, and referrals to campus support services. Special populations of students may be assigned as necessary.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide advising services for new and current students through drop-in sessions, scheduled appointments, and assigned events.
- Conduct advising sessions in person, via phone, or online, while maintaining a strong on-site presence for student accessibility.
- Monitor and support special populations of students as assigned.
- Guide students in course selection based on placement test scores and academic performance.
- Assist students in adapting to the demands and culture of higher education.
- Facilitate events and learning opportunities that aid students in achieving their academic and career objectives.
- Help students maintain good academic standing by informing them of relevant policies, procedures, and campus resources.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of RACC programs (both credit and non-credit) to assist students in identifying suitable programs for their goals.
- Document all student interactions appropriately.
- Support students in identifying the most effective pathways to program completion.
- Maintain positive relationships with Program Administrators and faculty to ensure accurate information is provided to students.
- Refer students to appropriate campus resources for assistance with disability services, academic and personal issues, and other college-related concerns.
- Refer students to relevant community resources.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications:To be successful in this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
Education and Experience:Required:
- Bachelor's Degree.
- One year of experience in a counseling or advising role within an educational setting.
- Experience working with individuals with diverse academic needs.
- Strong communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Internet skills.
Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree in counseling, education, or a related human-service field.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English).
- Experience in a community college setting.
- Understanding of course sequencing and educational planning.
- Familiarity with Colleague or other college administrative software.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Internet skills is essential. Knowledge of Ellucian Colleague or similar administrative software is a plus.
Other Skills and Abilities:Excellent communication and public speaking skills, along with strong interpersonal abilities. Capability to work effectively with diverse individuals. Proficient in one-on-one and group presentations, as well as written communication, particularly in report writing and business correspondence.
Communication Skills:Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business publications, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Capable of writing reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals. Proficient in presenting information and responding to inquiries from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills:Ability to perform basic mathematical operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Capable of computing rates, ratios, and percentages, as well as interpreting bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability:Ability to solve practical problems and address various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Capable of interpreting a variety of instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
