Key Responsibilities
Deliver Comprehensive Pharmaceutical Care to Emergency Department Patients
- Engage in daily patient care activities.
- Clarify medication orders with prescribers.
- Document changes in patient records and communicate medication order modifications.
- Monitor drug therapy for appropriateness in terms of dosage, form, regimen, and interactions.
- Provide pharmacokinetic consultations and dosing adjustments as needed.
- Identify, document, and report adverse drug reactions and medication errors.
- Contribute to drug therapy management during medical emergencies.
- Encourage formulary use by converting non-formulary orders when feasible, while coordinating procurement of necessary non-formulary medications.
- Maintain and update patient profiles with relevant information.
- Facilitate discharge, admission, and transfer processes for Emergency Department patients.
- Ensure timely antibiotic administration through appropriate channels.
- Advise patients on discharge medications as necessary.
- Optimize pharmacotherapy regimens based on current evidence-based practices.
- Stay informed on hospital pharmacy knowledge and maintain professional expertise.
Provide Operational Support in the Emergency Department and Central Pharmacy
- Review medication orders for accuracy and appropriateness.
- Perform order entry for designated areas.
- Resolve drug distribution issues and address automatic dispensing cabinet concerns.
Promote Rational and Cost-Effective Drug Therapy
- Identify opportunities for positive pharmacoeconomic impacts through drug therapy.
- Conduct medication use evaluations and report findings to relevant committees.
- Monitor the use of high-cost medications to ensure compliance with approved criteria.
- Anticipate changes in drug therapy and assess their potential impact on the hospital budget.
- Coordinate pharmaceutical care for ongoing research in the emergency department.
- Provide educational sessions for emergency department staff.
- Engage in research to define the role of emergency medicine pharmacists.
- Contribute to teaching programs related to emergency medicine.
- Support the professional development of pharmacists in emergency medicine.
- Deliver presentations and publications on emergency medicine topics.
- Participate in hospital committees and emergency medicine team meetings.

Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited pharmacy school with a Bachelor of Science or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.
- A minimum of two years of relevant hospital pharmacy experience or completion of an ASHP accredited PGY1 residency.
- Current license to practice pharmacy in the State of Iowa.
- ACLS certification or completion within three months of hire.
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Familiarity with standard pharmacy equipment.
