GENERAL OVERVIEW
Under the general oversight of the captain, this role involves delivering essential services, both independently and collaboratively, in response to fire, rescue, hazardous materials, and various emergency situations.
A Paramedic/Firefighter is tasked with addressing medical emergencies and providing pre-hospital ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT to individuals experiencing injury or health crises.
As the primary medical authority at emergency medical scenes, the Paramedic/Firefighter is responsible for making critical medical decisions based on established protocols and directives from medical leadership.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducts intricate diagnostic and medical procedures, including intravenous access, advanced airway management, and medication administration.
- Operates ambulances and other emergency vehicles, functioning as part of a paramedic team.
- Completes detailed reports on patient care for hospital records.
- Performs daily inspections of assigned apparatus, ensuring readiness and compliance with safety standards.
- Documents comprehensive patient histories accurately.
- Maintains control and inventory of medical supplies and equipment.
- Engages in firefighting activities as outlined in the Firefighter role.
- Utilizes firefighting tools and equipment to suppress fires and mitigate hazards.
- Participates in salvage operations and post-incident recovery efforts.
- Engages in training exercises and skill development as directed.
- Conducts fire and safety inspections of various properties.
- Maintains cleanliness and operational readiness of fire equipment and facilities.
- Responds to emergency medical calls and provides immediate care.
- Safely lifts and transfers patients using appropriate techniques.
- Handles hazardous materials incidents at an awareness level and assists the public as needed.
- Participates in community education initiatives regarding fire safety and emergency response.
- Facilitates training sessions on relevant topics for departmental staff.
- Utilizes technology for documentation and planning related to patient care.
- Operates fire apparatus under the supervision of the station officer.
- May serve as Engineer or Acting Officer in Charge when necessary.
- Performs additional duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- At least one year of experience as a certified EMT.
- State licensure as a Paramedic and completion of necessary reciprocity within two months of hire.
- Ongoing compliance with state-mandated continuing education, including certifications in Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATIONS
- Firefighter I and II certifications through the relevant state system.
- Hazardous Materials Awareness and Basic Operations Level certifications.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of triage and patient transport protocols.
- Proficiency in advanced life support techniques.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats.
- Capacity to manage stress and maintain composure in challenging situations.
- Familiarity with fire control methods and safety protocols.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position requires working in various weather conditions and emergency scenarios, with exposure to hazards associated with firefighting and emergency medical services.
