Job Title: Sr./Lead Engineer, Distribution System Planning

Join our team as a Sr./Lead Engineer, Distribution System Planning, and take on a challenging role that requires expertise in electric distribution system planning. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing electric distribution system planning assignments, requiring mastery of subject matter, with extensive experience planning distribution lines and distribution substation facilities in an electric power system.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Identify and lead the resolution of complex distribution system problems involving multiple feeders and substations, conducting scenario-based planning studies, evaluating alternatives, and recommending solutions to ensure a reliable distribution system.
  • Develop medium- and long-range distribution plans, addressing load relief, capacity, and asset-related issues.
  • Prepare contingency studies for distribution networks, including N-1 and N-2 analysis.
  • Propose new distribution overhead and underground feeders.
  • Conduct area-wide voltage and power factor studies, providing recommendations to distribution engineering.
  • Collaborate with the DER planning team on the wide-area distribution impacts of distributed generation.
  • Lead or conduct load forecast planning studies to determine distribution loads used in planning studies.
  • Partner with other departments to prepare economic analyses for complex projects, recommending cost allocations for facilities used jointly with other utilities.
  • Recommend project priorities for the capital construction program financial review.
  • Conduct and/or manage studies to support the need for facilities, evaluate alternatives, and recommend preferred solutions for distribution applications before regulatory agencies.
  • Provide leadership in coordinating multiple cross-functional groups and offer positive guidance to engineers.
  • Effectively communicate with distribution customers regarding proposed facilities.
  • Present recommendations and/or results to all levels of management as appropriate.
  • Represent the department and company on various committees.
  • Recommend the development and/or changes to criteria and standards for distribution planning.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, required; Electric Power Systems and Licensed Professional Engineer, preferred.
  • 5-8+ years of related experience in planning, design, and operations related to distribution line and distribution substation facilities, with a thorough knowledge of power system planning.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer, PE, is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of complex computer simulation techniques used in distribution planning.
  • Knowledge of techniques for planning the expansion of distribution lines and distribution substation facilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical theory as applied to planning an electric power supply system, in addition to distribution line design and operating practices.
  • Knowledge of National, State, and other planning standards.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, including formal presentation.
  • Excellent team skills with effective interpersonal skills, ability to develop strategic partnerships.
  • Ability to achieve desired results by setting high standards for self and others and accepting responsibility for outcomes.
  • Recognized by others in New England as a technical expert.
