Benefits Specialist

The Resilience Team at Commonpoint Queens supports vulnerable members of the community by helping them meet their basic needs through a holistic, collaborative approach. The Benefits Specialist plays a vital role in this mission by guiding clients through the complex process of accessing public benefits.

Responsibilities
  • Screen potential applicants and assist with the submission of applications for Long Island and New York City benefits programs, including SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Child Care Vouchers, WIC, and public cash assistance.
  • Gather and review all required documentation to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Investigate reasons for benefit denials and provide support with appeals and procedures for overpayments.
  • Educate clients on the eligibility requirements and workings of various benefits programs, ensuring they understand their options and rights.
  • Collaborate closely with case workers to develop comprehensive intake assessments for basic needs and create personalized plans for self-sufficiency.
  • Build strong relationships with partner agencies and community service providers to expand access to resources for clients.
  • Maintain accurate client records in Salesforce and Google Tracker, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with all guidelines.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in public benefits programs serving Long Island residents. Familiarity with New York City benefit programs is a plus.
  • High School Diploma required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and computer skills.
  • Bilingual fluency in Farsi is highly desirable.
