Job Summary

The Ophthalmic Assistant plays a vital role in the eye care team, conducting measurements and tests to provide the physician with the necessary information for diagnosis and treatment. This position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Takes an ocular and systemic history and accurately records visual acuity.
  • Reviews patient charts to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.
  • Performs testing required by type of exam scheduled, patient complaint, and history.
  • Acts as a scribe while the physician examines the patient, entering data into electronic medical records.
  • Administers diagnostic tests, including OCT, automated visual fields, photography, pachymetry, and biometry.
  • Administers topical ophthalmic or oral medications.
  • Assists with in-office procedures, ensuring proper informed consent is obtained, sets up, and cleans up after clinical procedures.
  • Assists with patient education.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the workday.
  • Complies with all practice procedures and protocols, as well as state and federal regulations.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience in eye care preferred but not required.
  • Basic computer skills for electronic recordkeeping.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
